CLEVELAND -- House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) made a pit stop in Painesville, Ohio, on Saturday night to plug Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney and Senate Republican hopeful Josh Mandel.
But even after being introduced by Mandel, who is running in a tight race against Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio), Boehner temporarily forgot his name.
"I've got to tell you, I'm proud of our ticket. Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan," Boehner said to some claps. "Uh, we've got, uh ... He was just here. I'm going brain-dead. Josh Mandel!"
Boehner talked for only about four minutes. But he fired up the crowd -- a few hundred people packed into a small room at the Lake County Republican headquarters -- by saying that he had noticed President Barack Obama "didn't look too happy" during a recent speech.
"I thought to myself that must be because he knows he's going to get his butt kicked on Tuesday!" Boehner said to cheers.
The speaker got in a few more shots at Obama, saying the president hasn't fulfilled promises to cut the deficit in half and reduce unemployment. Curiously, he also criticized Obama for not being willing "to work across the aisle" in Washington -- something congressional Republicans have refused to do at unprecedented levels since Obama became president. Boehner actually made history when, in August 2011, he declined to give Obama permission to speak before a joint session of Congress.
Nonetheless, the criticisms played well at the Painesville event.
"The only time he's ever worked across the aisle is when he was getting what he wanted," Boehner said of Obama. "I learned a long time ago life doesn't work that way. Life's a two-way street."
A woman in the crowd called out, "That's right."
