Female kicker set for NFL regional combine tryout

Lauren Silberman has scant chance at making the NFL.

Silberman never kicked anything more than a soccer ball in an organized game and she just started practicing long-range field goals.

Even so, the first female kicker scheduled to try out at an NFL regional scouting combine would like to see where her new hobby will take her. In an era where Danica Patrick can contend against men in motor sports, Silberman is about to take a big kick forward for female athletes, even if the odds are clearly stacked against her. The 28-year-old Silberman will kick Sunday at the New York Jets' training facility in Florham Park, N.J.

"I realize that I may not make an NFL team this year," Silberman told NFL.com. "But for me, I'm expecting to have fun, to meet really interesting people and hopefully perfect my technique from the other tremendous kickers that will be in attendance."

Her goal for the weekend is a true long shot: perfect 60-yard field goals.

Odds are, though, that scouts will want to see her connect on extra points and chip-shot field goals with some consistency before moving on to the heavy kicking.

Silberman will compete against more accomplished or polished college kickers, all hoping to prove they have the leg strength and accuracy worthy of earning an invite to an NFL training camp. St. Louis Rams kicker Greg Zuerlein participated in a regional combine last year before he was drafted and morphed into "Legatron."

Cincinnati Bengals special teams coach Darrin Simmons said teams look for several things specifically when judging kickers in these situations. The most important is leg strength, followed by accuracy on field goals over 40 yards, and how they did on clutch kicks in college.

"When rating field goals, the deepest we test at the combine is a 50-yard field goal. There's not many attempts over 55 yards. We don't practice kicks much deeper than that ? rarely do we do them," Simmons said. "You can tell after watching a 50-yard field goal how far the ball goes over the crossbar if they can hit from 55. They've got to be able to hit from 55. On kickoffs, they've got to be able to get the ball out of the back of the end zone."

Silberman won't be kicking against the best of the sure-footed prospects, but there will be talent on hand regardless. The regional combines debuted in 2011, and feature players who weren't among the 333 invited to the main combine in Indianapolis. So no first-round picks are likely to show; only potential, hidden, undrafted gems or late-round risks. The league is holding these sessions in 10 cities this offseason, with the most impressive players advancing to a super-regional in April in Dallas. It's sort of the sports version of a TV reality show, where each hit and tackle can wow a scout and move a player on to the next round. Only instead of a recording contract, it's an NFL one.

"It's all up to those guys. If you're talented enough, you're going to get recognized. And if you put up good numbers, the numbers don't lie," said Doug Whaley, assistant general manager/director of player personnel for the Buffalo Bills. "That's one of the things about the combine part of this business. It's the least subjective part of the business. And it's really objective, because you're looking at numbers."

Silberman hasn't treated the tryout like a publicity stunt. But Silberman, whose NFL.com bio listed her as a former club soccer player at Wisconsin, seems to understand what she's up against. More likely, she wanted to use the weekend as an opportunity to promote greater diversity in football.

"It would be a great opportunity to attract more women to the sport," she said. "Hopefully, I'll have a good line that won't let anyone through to tackle me."

Silberman also can use this opportunity as a steppingstone to other ventures. Public speaking, perhaps, or even some sports marketing.

"The real upside is if she reaches the next level," said Steve Rosner, a partner with 16W Marketing in New Jersey. "Kickers, in general, aren't brands. Very rare. Even someone like Adam Vinatieri, who (has won) Super Bowls, would have to do a little more than kick to capitalize and endorse at the national level. The one thing she has that they don't have is that she's a woman. The uniqueness of her and the possible success she has will differentiate what she has at that position."

While a female has never played in the NFL, if the gender breakthrough did happen, it most likely would be at kicker.

Females have kicked or tried out for a roster spot in the college ranks for years. Just last season, former LSU women's soccer goalkeeper Mo Isom tried out as a Tigers placekicker. In 2003, Katie Hnida became the first woman to kick for an NCAA Division I-A football team, scoring in one game for the University of New Mexico.

Hnida, who later kicked for the Fort Wayne Firehawks of the Continental Indoor Football League, was surprised a player with no true kicking background would be scouted at a combine.

"I thought it would be an athlete who has come through the ranks of playing football for a long time," she said. "It is so different kicking in a live situation, too, dealing with the timing of the snap, having guys rushing at you. That's where you separate the good from the great."

Sean Landeta, a Super Bowl champion and considered one of the NFL's great punters, gave Silberman credit for competing, one way or the other.

"I think it's courageous on her part in trying this, and certainly groundbreaking if she could prove her skills are good enough to play in the NFL," he said. "What a team's policy would be as far entertaining the thought in signing a female, that's still debatable. No one knows that answer. ... I give her points for giving it a shot. She's obviously following her dream."

Forget game-on-the-line playoff pressure, Silberman will instead kick in front of low-level scouts. They, like the players themselves, are trying to move up the ranks.

"In terms of regional combines, we usually send one younger pro and college scout," Philadelphia Eagles general manager Howie Roseman said. "And then, (at the) super-regional, we send a bunch of higher level scouts."

Agent Rob Roche represents four kickers, including Baltimore's Justin Tucker. He said from an agent's perspective, finding the right situation for a young kicker is most important, because there's only 32 jobs available. Teams, after all, tend to stick with a kicker when they feel they can trust him, rather than bringing in someone younger with limited NFL experience. Roche said kickers who lack experience at the major-college level face daunting odds.

"To come out and start kicking and you've never kicked in college," he said, "you don't know how a player is going to react under pressure when the game's on the line and you're kicking in Denver in the snow and it's overtime."

Silberman plans to prove she's up for the task.

"I'm going to be doing a lot of practicing from now until the tryout," she said.

Marten Weber: The Modern Nomad

I thought my life was special. As a business consultant, I traveled millions of miles and saw the world; now, as a writer, I visit all those fantastic places all over again on book tours and journeys of inspiration. But at the end of a trip, business or pleasure, I always come back to my comfy chair, my collection of antique maps and my poor, mistreated plants. I come back home. The average human is anchored to a physical center that only changes a few times in our lives, if we move cities for studies or work.

This is such a normal state of affairs that I never questioned it, until now. Last week I realized that there is another option to this traditional form of existence. I met, again on the hirsute social app I keep mentioning, one of the most interesting Internet personalities ever: The Modern Nomad. Check out his site; it's inspiring! I clicked on the little picture because I have a thing for muscular backs attached to bearded faces. I ended up in a new universe.

Gustav (his real name) takes the art of alternative living to a new level. He has no home. No house, no flat and certainly no mortgage. What he owns fits in his backpack. Like a tin, he does what it says on his label: He is a modern nomad. I am not speaking of herding cattle in the Maghreb (not very modern). He works, plays and fucks like the rest of us, but he combines it with physical movement. Every few months he packs up and explores a new part of the world.

It's an interesting concept, combining the hunter-gatherer lifestyle of our ancestors and our male drive for independence with savvy roaming and sustainability. Gustav is the antidote to suburban sprawl, commuter trains, traffic jams and midlife crises.

Gustav still calls his life an experiment in alternative living, but based on my conversations with him, I think he has proved it viable. Technology enables him to be more than a drifter. He uses it not only to make a living working online but also to spread his life philosophy through his blog. "I want to inspire people to actively choose how to live their lives, and do so with bravery," he says. "Breaking society's normative ideas of how we should live our lives is hard, but if your heart does not conform with those ideas, then you must."

As gay men, we share more than just a social app; we share a head start toward the freedom from such social norms. As the nomad says, "Being gay helped me find the courage to tread my own path. I broke society's norms once when I came out, and survived. So why not do it again? (And again!) Indeed, coming out can be so much more than telling Mom you are in love with the boy next door. Coming out, in a broader sense, is also the courage to go against the mainstream, to leave behind a life dictated by corporate infrastructure, television commercials or emulation of other people."

Being gay also allows Gustav to connect more easily with guys around the world. "It sounds crass, but there is no quicker way to make friends than sleeping with them," he says. "And gay social apps, initially created for urbanites to get laid quicker, makes finding these new friends much faster. I have even changed my travel plans on account of some hot guy inviting me to his country."

Well, after several hours of chatting on Scruff, I put his nomadic credentials to the test and invited him to my house for an extended stay. I did send him a revealing picture, to be sure! Don't want to... you know. He accepted and is ready to book his flight. We just need to wait for the end of winter, because I'm planning to take him on extended hiking trips -- with his shirt off.

I am looking forward to meeting him. Maybe I'll convert to nomadism with him. What better way to find inspiration for a writer than to hit the open road!

PayPal co-founder launches competitor start-up

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Max Levchin, co-founder of online payment giant PayPal, launched a rival business on Tuesday called Affirm that will compete in the crowded but fast-growing mobile payments business.

Affirm's technology helps shoppers complete online purchases more quickly and easily when they are using smart phones and other mobile devices, according to the firm's website.

PayPal, owned by eBay Inc, is the leader in online payments, however, the company is being challenged by a host of start-ups, including Square Inc, that focus on new opportunities and problems created by the boom in mobile commerce.

Affirm is focusing on streamlining the mobile checkout process online, which can involve typing in lots of information, such as an address and card numbers, using a small type pad.

Affirm said it has whittled the online buying process down to two taps on a smart phone screen - one to tap the Affirm button on participating merchant websites and a second to confirm the order.

Affirm is using Facebook Inc to confirm users' identities, so for first-time users the process includes a third step which involves logging into their Facebook accounts and accepting the Affirm application.

Levchin co-founded PayPal with Peter Thiel and was its Chief Technology Officer for four years, before it was acquired by eBay. He designed and built PayPal's pioneering online security and fraud-prevention systems.

While PayPal led the way on security, its service has been criticized as not very user-friendly. That has left room for new rivals to develop more consumer-focused payment services.

"This is a very big market therefore it's extremely attractive for a lot of players," Bob Swan, chief financial officer of eBay, said during a presentation to investors on Tuesday.

As more consumers shop using mobile devices, it is very important for PayPal to have a fast mobile checkout service that is "brain-dead simple," Swan added.

Affirm said it gives users 30 days to pay for their purchases, comparing the service to a charge card. It makes money by charging participating merchants a small fee.

However, if users do not pay their balance, Affirm can charge "reasonable" fees on delinquent accounts, according to the company's terms of service.

Affirm users can pay off their balances using credit cards, bank transfers or physical checks. PayPal was not included as a method of payment in its terms of service.

imate talks up the Intelegent, a 47inch slab of vaporware

Don't worry if Dubai-based smartphone maker i-mate had slipped your mind. The business unceremoniously collapsed back in 2009 after allegedly suffering a "major fraud" that led it to fire all of its employees. Fortunately, CEO Jim Morrison is back with a new mobile device that, he claims, runs full-fat Windows 8 in the same way that Ubuntu for Android will behave. The i-mate Intelegent is a 4.7-inch handset running the desktop OS on a Clover Trail CPU with 2GB RAM and 64GB storage. The secret, however, is that the $750 handset will slot into a Webtop-esque desktop dock to become your work machine when you get into the office. Morrison has said that there's a factory in California ready to produce 10,000 units a week, and told the Seattle Times that he'd be showing off the device here at MWC. We can't find it on the exhibitor list, but we're about to go hunting...

Eight killed in fighting between Congo rebel factions: sources

KINSHASA (Reuters) - At least eight people were killed - most of them civilians - when fighting erupted between rival factions of eastern Congo's most powerful rebel group, a U.N.-backed radio station and a local source said.

The clashes deep inside territory controlled by the M23 insurgents risk undermining regionally-backed peace talks in neighbouring Uganda between the fighters and Democratic Republic of Congo's government.

They appear to be the first serious sign of tensions within the group, which caused regional shockwaves in November when it routed government troops and pushed past U.N. peacekeepers to briefly seize Goma, the provincial capital of North Kivu.

U.N.-backed Radio Okapi said the fighting broke out on Sunday in the rebel stronghold of Rutshuru between fighters loyal to M23's military chief, Sultani Makenga, and supporters of warlord Bosco Ntaganda.

Ntaganda triggered the insurgency last April when he quit his post as a Congolese army general, taking hundreds of soldiers with him.

The eight people died when a rocket hit a bar in the centre of the town, the radio station reported.

A local businessman told Reuters on condition of anonymity that he saw the eight dead bodies and said the fighting was between rival elements of M23.

M23 spokesman Bertrand Bisimwa acknowledged here had been fighting in Rutshuru but denied any factional split, instead blaming another rebel group, Rwanda's FDLR.

"It wasn't our men fighting, it was the FDLR, unfortunately right in the centre of Rutshuru," he said, without elaborating "Everything is calm in our ranks."

No one from the FDLR could be reached to comment.

WAR CRIMES FUGITIVE

Nicknamed "The Terminator", Rwandan-born Ntaganda is wanted by the International Criminal Court for alleged war crimes including the massacre of civilians during a previous Tutsi rebellion.

The United Nations says he controls the M23 rebellion, but M23 has repeatedly denied his involvement in the group.

Congo's eastern borderlands have suffered nearly two decades of conflict stoked by ethnic and political enmities and fighting over the region's rich resources of gold, tin, tungsten and coltan - a precious metal used to make mobile phones.

Successive attacks by myriad rebel and militia groups and government soldiers have made the region notorious among rights groups for mass killings, recruitment of child soldiers and rapes used as a weapon of war.

Political analysts say stalled talks between M23 and the Congolese government in Uganda could be exposing old grievances between Makenga and Ntaganda, who have previously found themselves in different factions of rebel movements in Congo.

A split within M23 could undermine peace negotiations, particularly if one faction chooses to continue fighting.

The group accuses the government of failing to hold up its end of a March 23, 2009 peace deal - from which it takes its name - and has sought to gain popular support by tapping into public frustration over the slow pace of reforms in Congo.

M23 has controlled Rutshuru since July and has made it a central administrative zone for the movement. The town, in North Kivu province, is close to the Ugandan and Rwandan borders.

Shooting at South Carolina university wounds one

Charleston, South Carolina (Reuters) - At least one person was wounded in a shooting on Tuesday at a residence hall of a South Carolina university near the resort area of Myrtle Beach, and authorities were searching for a gunman, the university said.

Students were urged to remain in their dorm rooms at Coastal Carolina University in Conway, but the gunman was believed to have fled the scene, school officials said.

The shooting occurred just before 7:30 p.m. at University Place, an apartment-style residence hall that is home to nearly 2,000 students.

"The suspect fled in a vehicle. The campus is still on lockdown, although people in classrooms were allowed to go home. Those in dorms were advised to stay inside," said Mona Prufer, a university spokeswoman.

She said a shooting victim had been taken to a hospital in Myrtle Beach but had no further details.

The shooting came as the nation remains on edge over gun violence following the elementary school massacre in Newtown, Connecticut, in December, in which 20 children and six adults were shot and killed.

More than 9,000 students attend Coastal Carolina University, which was founded in 1954 as Coastal Carolina Junior College and became an independent university in 1993.

The university had not decided late Tuesday whether to hold classes on Wednesday, said university spokesman Doug Bell.

Drew Holcomb on Songwriting, Fatherhood, and the NBA | Popdose

DrewHolcomb
You?ve probably heard a Drew Holcomb song before. His music has been featured on an endless amount of television shows: Parenthood, Justified, Deadliest Catch, How I Met Your Mother, House, One Tree Hill ? and those are just the ones I can remember off the top of my head, so it?s ironic when the words ?I don?t watch a lot of TV? come out of his mouth in the opening line of ?Rooftops? from his latest release, Good Light. Because if he merely watched the shows that have featured his music, he?d be watching plenty of television.

It will be hard for Holcomb to top 2012. His wife and bandmate, Ellie, welcomed their first child Emmylou, who has been out promoting their new record. Although playing Bonnaroo in 2013 won?t hurt, and for the next week, Drew and his band are on The Rock Boat cruise with Sister Hazel, Brandi Carlile and others.

Normally here at Popdose, we pick up the phone and have a conversation with artists. But my day job makes that impossible. So I did my best to put together a decent batch of questions. Hope you enjoy the interview.

Did you get put in the doghouse by your wife and bandmate for this tweet?

That was a good time. She laughed it off. Ellie is pretty amazing like that. She laughs at herself often, so it takes the heat off me. We enjoy each other?s idiosyncrasies 99% of the time, which is good because we are together 99% of the time since we tour and record and write together.

Speaking of tweets, you woke up last month with a ringing endorsement from Rob Thomas.

The early returns on that song have been really strong and supportive.

Video may have killed the radio star, but TV shows have helped keep your dream alive. Your video for ?Fire & Dynamite? was played on VH1 for awhile, but it seems you almost get a stronger reaction for being included on a TV show.

Having our music used on TV has really expanded our fan base, and put our music in the ears of hundreds of thousands of people (even millions for some shows), who probably would never have heard us otherwise. It has also helped keep gas in the tank and the light bills paid.

And it isn?t just TV shows, either ? the NBA (or TNT) believed in you, and you even won an award for it. Tell us about the award and how that came about.

I woke up late on Christmas morning in 2012 to a barrage of texts and tweets from friends and fans congratulating me on the NBA commercial. I had no idea what they were talking about, until I finally saw the commercial ?NBA Forever? a few hours later, and the sports blogosphere was aflame with praise for the piece. Apparently, the creative director at TNT had heard my song ?Live Forever? and built this beautiful commercial using footage of older and current players. It was very melodramatic, and Rick Reilly was tweeting, calling it the greatest sports commercial of all time. It was all very surreal. We won a Sports Emmy the following summer, which was obviously very exciting for a guy who got cut from the baseball team in 10th grade.

And about your Grizzlies, are they going to win the Southwest division this year?

I sure hope so, they are the hardest working team in the NBA, and thankfully I was able to go to a game earlier this season.

?Live Forever? was written for your nieces and nephews. Now that you?re a father, have you found yourself writing songs for your new child? Is a kids? album in your future? Ellie was a part of the Rain for Roots album.

I don?t know if a kids? album is my future, but I am sure that being a father will continue to influence my writing and the way I see the world. Many of the songs on Good Light were written and recorded while Ellie was pregnant, and it is the only music that soothes our daughter, Emmylou. We can put on our record and she gets calm immediately. The only problem is that I have to listen to my own voice more often than I would like.

It seems with Good Light, you?ve finally found a groove/comfort zone and written an album where you can say ?This is what I?ve always wanted a Drew Holcomb and the Neighbors record to sound like.?

I agree. It is a very personal album. Songs like ?Tennessee? are about my family and my upbringing. ?The Wine We Drink? is about Ellie and our marriage. These songs were coming together and I wanted to treat them differently than I have in past records. We recorded live at Ardent studios, a historic studio in my hometown of Memphis. We did not layer guitars, or build the Wall of Sound type recordings like we did on Chasing Someday. We had five rules on the wall during the recording process: 1. Be Brave 2. Perfection is a myth 3. Keep it Simple 4. Take Chances 5. The song is in charge.

You nearly gave up on the music biz and a career in music. Are you enjoying this sort of second life resurgence in your career? What caused you to nearly quit and what kept that fire going?

People always told me that if you write the right songs, those songs will do the work for you. Up to that point where I almost quit, about five years into my career, I was feeling like everything was a steep uphill climb. Then ?Live Forever? came out, and ?Fire and Dynamite,? and something changed. It felt like the song was doing the work. When we would play live, there were a lot more strangers than familiar faces, and they were singing along to those two songs. So for me, the songs kept the fire going.

You?ve had your music featured on NoiseTrade numerous times. Is giving away your songs worth getting an email and zip code?

We think so. As an independent musician, you need access to your fans, and access comes through things like a good mailing list, social media, etc. While we love the creative side of our work, we have to pay close attention to the business side too, so we can keep doing this. We only give away music on NoiseTrade long after it has been released, so it?s a way to pick up new fans and listeners who would not otherwise come on board. They trust us with their information, we give them something in return.

In 2012 you released, Through the Night, an album of covers. What were you able to take from those songs to enhance your songwriting for Good Light?

The songs we recorded for Through the Night were all songs that have been a part of my story for a long time. The thing we took with us for Good Light was the approach we took to recording. I have a band that is tremendously talented, and I try as best I can to defer to them in matters of arrangements and parts. Recording that covers album was a very communal, intimate process, and we carried that into our Good Light sessions.

How long have you been kicking around songs for Good Light? Are they all relatively new, or have some been hanging around for years?

Most of them are new, written between October 2011 and July 2012. There are few that have been brewing more much longer than that. ?Nothing But Trouble? is a song Ellie and I had written and re-written half a dozen times and this time we finally landed on a final version that everyone in the band loves.

How often do you write songs? Do you sit down and write or do you start singing in your iPhone whenever the song comes to you?

Its a little bit of both. I tend to write more in between records than I do while we are recording or releasing a record. But I do set time aside. Good songwriting is a healthy balance of inspiration and hard work.

Do you kick around a lot of ideas off the Neighbors or do you come to the studio with a full set of songs?

We usually test new songs on the road. Most of the songs on Good Light have been played at least three or four times on tour somewhere. So the band has a big say in how we interpret a new song before we go into the studio.

Your faith and spirituality has always been a part of your music, but it never comes across as over the top religious or preachy. That?s a fine line to tread. Do you feel you need to keep that in check? Nashville has always been a music hotbed, but it seems have gone through a recent resurgence with yourself and Leagues and other artists. How fun has that been to watch?

I don?t feel a need to keep anything in my writing in check. I hardly think about it all, honestly. I grew up on Dylan and Radiohead and Van Morrison, and dozens of other artists who all see the world from a different point of view. I never bought into the idea that we, as complex people, need to make our art one-dimensional by turning it into a sermon. My songs are about struggle, doubt, love, hope, sorrow, discontentment. So many of my friends who make music, like the guys in Leagues who you mentioned, all come from a broad diversity of stories and experiences and we are just trying to add a meaningful contribution to the conversation that has been going on between artists and fans for years.

Best Springsteen album?

Ghost of Tom Joad because it was my first Springsteen album. Born to Run will always be the classic.

What newer albums have you been digging a lot lately?

Amos Lee?s Mission Bell. Dawes? Nothing is Wrong. Brandi Carlile?s Bear Creek. Leagues? You Belong Here. Michael Kiwanuka. Kacey Musgraves.

What classic records have you been indulging in lately?

I?ve also been listening to a lot of old soul like the Staple Singers, the Chi-Lites, the Five Stairsteps. So much great old radio music.

What?s more enjoyable ? the studio or the stage?

I love them both, but the stage is home for me.

Social media for musicians ? Blessing or a curse?

90% of the time it?s a blessing. It?s great to be able to reach out directly to people who care about your music.

Good Light is available now on iTunes and everywhere else tomorrow.

ZTE Open Firefox OS phone announced at MWC 2013, we go hands-on

Alcatel wasn't the only one to flash some Firefox OS hardware at Mozilla's big MWC event. ZTE was also showing off two shades of its new smartphone, the Open. The device will launch in orange and blue in global territories starting in Q2. It has a very handy 3.5-inch screen, meaning there's no issues holding it in one hand but there's not a lot of premium feel going on here. The plastic shell felt like any low-end Android device, though we won't fault the grippy finish here.

Other specs (that we've already snuck a peek at) include a Cortex-A5-based Qualcomm processor that could be clocked at either 600MHz or 800MHz -- we're trying to get a confirmation on that. There's also 256MB of RAM, 512MB of expandable storage and a humble 3.2-megapixel camera on the back. The 480 x 320 screen itself is nothing to shout home about. Again, it feels like a flashback to those sub-$150 smartphones that did the rounds back in 2011 and while it's not the flashiest spec sheet, ZTE (and Firefox) are pitching this at those millions of future smartphone users that haven't already plumped for a mobile OS. However, the search function looks pretty pervasive, able to tap into apps, the web and more in search of the answer you're looking for. Specific carriers will be able to add in their own apps (pre-installed or not) for its customers. We got a glimpse at a data monitoring app that could pull together your data habits and respective carrier plans -- even if there's no word on a US release beyond some time in 2014. There's a quick hands-on after the break.

South Africa: will Pistorius train while on bail?

Olympic athlete, Oscar Pistorius , in court Friday Feb. 22, 2013 in Pretoria, South Africa, for his bail hearing charged with the shooting death of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp. The defense and prosecution both completed their arguments with the magistrate soon to rule if the double-amputee athlete can be freed before trial or if he must stay behind bars pending trial. (AP Photo)

(AP) ? Oscar Pistorius on Monday informed South African authorities that he wants to resume athletic training while on bail for the murder case against him, a government official said.

A spokeswoman for the Olympic runner, however, denied that he was making immediate plans to return to the track while awaiting trial for the Feb. 14 shooting death of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp.

"Absolutely not," said spokeswoman Janine Hills. "He is currently in mourning and his focus is not on his sports."

The double-amputee Paralympian discussed bail terms with his probation officer and a correctional official at the Pretoria Magistrate's Court in the capital, Hills said. The guidelines will determine his daily routine until his next court appearance on June 4.

"It's his wish to continue to practice," James Smalberger, chief deputy commissioner of the department of correctional services, said in a telephone interview with The Associated Press.

Smalberger said the issue came up because authorities need to know his movements whenever he leaves the home where he is staying.

The timing of any resumption of training was uncertain.

Pistorius' longtime coach, Ampie Louw, declined to comment on any training plans for the runner, referring questions to a spokeswoman for the athlete's family.

Louw had said when the runner was in detention that he wanted to put him back into training in the event that he was granted bail. But he had also said Pistorius could be "heartbroken" and unwilling to immediately run again.

Pistorius, who was released on bail Friday, is staying at the house of his uncle, Arnold, in the affluent suburb of Waterkloof in Pretoria. He faces life imprisonment if convicted.

Pistorius is charged with premeditated murder in the killing of Steenkamp, in the early hours of Valentine's Day. Prosecutors say the pair had an argument before Steenkamp was killed; Pistorius says he mistook her for an intruder and shot her accidentally.

Smalberger said officials will visit Pistorius at his uncle's home at least four times a month, and that the runner indicated his interest in training again. More planning must occur before the start of any training.

"We want a training program from his coach so that we have backup for his movements," Smalberger said.

"He's not under house arrest, but his movements need to be known to us so that we don't pitch there and he's not there," he said. "We agree on 'free time' normally during the course of the day, and in the evening we expect him to be home."

Pistorius' 2013 season had been geared towards the Aug. 10-18 World Championships in Moscow, where the South African 4x400 relay team will be trying for another medal to add to the silver it won at the 2011 edition.

Chief Magistrate Desmond Nair had set bail at 1 million rand ($113,000). The 26-year-old track star was also ordered to hand over his passports, turn in any guns he owns and keep away from his upscale home in a gated community in Pretoria, the scene of the crime.

He cannot leave the district of Pretoria without his probation officer's permission and is not allowed to consume drugs or alcohol, the magistrate said.

Strasburg gives up early HR, Mets beat Nats 5-3

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (AP) ? Stephen Strasburg had a rocky return to the mound in his first outing since the Washington Nationals shut him down last September to protect his arm.

Strasburg gave up a single and a full-count homer to the first two batters he faced Saturday, and the New York Mets beat Washington 5-3 in a spring training opener.

Kirk Nieuwenhuis led off the Mets' first inning with a single and Ruben Tejada followed with a two-run shot that the wind carried over the left-center fence.

"It was a little bit of a debacle the first inning, but that's just what happens for me every spring training," Strasburg said. "It's just going to take a little while for me to get a little comfortable, a better rhythm out there. I was just glad I was able to get back feeling right in the second inning."

The right-hander rebounded with a 1-2-3 second inning. He was pitching in a game for the first time since Sept. 7 when the NL East champions shut him down for the season, rather than push his innings total.

Mets newcomer Shaun Marcum gave up four hits and three runs in two innings. Top prospect Zack Wheeler pitched two shutout innings.

Strasburg also gave up a two-out double to Marlon Byrd in the first but ended a 29-pitch inning by striking out Lucas Duda.

Strasburg allowed three hits in two innings. He struck out two, walked none and threw 24 of 42 pitches for strikes.

"I threw a couple good breaking balls in the second inning, and my fastball command got better and the sinker seemed to be working well," Strasburg said. "It was a good first outing."

Strasburg also gave up a home run in his 2012 spring training debut, to Chris Snyder, his batterymate Saturday.

"He settled down a little the second inning, dropped his pitches in, was effective and we'll go from there," Snyder said. "He's got good stuff. It's hard. The two-seamer has good stuff to it, and the curveball and changeup are both putaway pitches."

The Mets are similarly excited about Wheeler, who was impressive in relief of Marcum.

After Marcum gave up a two-run homer to Snyder in the second, Wheeler allowed just one hit and one walk while throwing 19 of 30 pitches for strikes.

"He's got a great arm," Mets manager Terry Collins said. "I was impressed with his breaking ball. I'm sure he was a little geeked up going out there. The second inning he pounded the strike zone. That was great to see."

Wheeler had to work himself out of an early jam, though. After walking his first batter, he threw a wild pitch to Bryce Harper but got him on a groundout and then struck out the next two batters to strand a runner on third.

"It wasn't really nerves. I just was a little pumped up getting out there," said Wheeler, expected to begin the season at Triple-A Las Vegas. "After the first couple batters, I think everything went well. I was getting underneath my slider a little bit. It was backing up, but I still got some swings and misses from it."

NOTES: With the score tied at 3, Collin Cowgill hit an RBI double in the sixth inning to drive in the go-ahead run for the Mets. Bobby Parnell closed the game with a shutout inning. ... Mets reliever Pedro Feliciano has been diagnosed with a small hole in the exterior of his heart, but upon returning to camp Saturday morning, he said it is not life-threatening. The left-hander underwent an MRI in New York, where he was sent after an irregular heartbeat was discovered in his pre-camp physical. Feliciano will wear a heart monitor for a few days and has not been cleared to pitch. ... Nationals pitcher Christian Garcia received a second opinion on his strained forearm, but the diagnosis remained the same. Manager Davey Johnson said he still doesn't believe the injury is severe.

US troops in Niger to set up drone base

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama said Friday that about 100 American troops have been deployed to the African nation of Niger. Two U.S. defense officials the troops would be setting up a base for unarmed drones to conduct surveillance.

Obama announced the deployment in a letter to Congress, saying that the forces "will provide support for intelligence collection and will also facilitate intelligence sharing with French forces conducting operations in Mali, and with other partners in the region."

The move marks a deepening of U.S. efforts to stem the spread of al-Qaida and its affiliates in the volatile region. It also underscores Obama's desire to fight extremism without involving large numbers of U.S. ground forces.

The drone base will allow the U.S. to give France more intelligence on the militants its forces have been fighting in Mali, which neighbors Niger. Over time, it could extend the reach not only of American intelligence-gathering but also U.S. special operations missions to strengthen Niger's own security forces.

One of the two U.S. defense officials who discussed the development confirmed the American troops would fly drones and other surveillance platforms from Niger military airstrips, tracking militant and refugee movement inside Mali and around the border. The U.S. will share that intelligence with Niger's military, the official said.

Both officials spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to publicly discuss the project.

The drones at the Niger base will be unarmed and used for surveillance, not airstrikes. Still, the development of a base in Niger raises the possibility that it could eventually be used for launching strikes.

Obama said in his letter to Congress that the U.S. forces have been deployed with the consent of Niger's government. The forces were also deployed with weapons "for their own force protection and security," the president said.

Last month, the U.S. and Niger signed a status-of-forces-agreement spelling out legal protections and obligations of American forces that might operate in Niger in the future.

Africa is increasingly a focus of U.S. counterterrorism efforts, even as al-Qaida remains a threat in Pakistan, Yemen and elsewhere. Last month's terrorist attack on a natural gas complex in Algeria, in which at least 37 hostages and 29 militants were killed, illustrated the threat posed by extremists who have asserted power propelled by long-simmering ethnic tensions in Mali and the revolution in Libya.

A number of al-Qaida-linked Islamic extremist groups operate in Mali and elsewhere in the Sahara, including a group known as al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb, or AQIM, which originated in Algeria and is active in northern Mali. Earlier this month, French forces intervened to stop the extremists' move toward Mali's capital, and Washington has grown more involved by providing a variety of military support to French troops.

France has said it will eventually pull out of its Mali operation so that African forces can help stabilize the West African country.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers v Carolina PanthersGetty Images

The Buccaneers want to try to keep defensive end Michael Bennett, and met with his agent yesterday at the NFL Scouting Combine about a new deal.

But they?re not going to use the franchise tag on him, and are prepared to move forward with Da?Quan Bowers if need be, according to Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times.

?We?ve spoken internally as an organization with ownership, certainly with Greg [Schiano] and me, and we?re not going to use the franchise or transition tag on any player on our roster,?? general manager Mark Dominik said. ?We?re trying to meet with the agents of every single one of our free agents so they can understand the direction we?re thinking, where we?re heading. We?re still having negotiations or conversations with them. It?s hard to say whether they will be productive or not, but it?s certainly something we try to do is have meetings with the agents of our free agents and have meaningful dialogue.??

Bennett led the team with nine sacks last year, and will certainly find interest if he reaches the market.

But despite the fact Bowers faces gun charges after a recent arrest at New York?s LaGuardia Airport, the Bucs are confident the former second-round pick can become their top pass-rusher if Bennett leaves.

?Da?Quan is a guy I thought continued to accelerate his play throughout the end of the season,?? Dominik said. ?The more we can get him on the football field, I think the better we are as a football team. Certainly, that?s part of the thought process going forward with our entire football team, hopefully getting Adrian Clayborn back and 100 percent healthy and then be able to pair him with a guy like Da?Quan who we feel can be a premier left end in this league. That certainly has to be part of the entire picture we?re looking at, not only with free agency, but how we?re putting this thing together.??

Of course, suggesting that?s a subtle reminder that Bennett?s not irreplaceable, especially for a team with $30 million in cap space and possibly more on the way.

AdvSecret.com Stay Ahead Of The Game With These Internet ...

By Robert Strong

Just about any business can really thrive if it is properly marketed. If you follow the tips below you will be able to market your business in a way that is fruitful. Knowing the right way to handle internet marketing is the key to a successful business when working online.

Change your content or headlines to find out what attracts more people. Most visitors might not be attracted by something that sound too good to be true, even if you thought this headline presented your product under a better light. Find out what works best and develop your strategies around this.

You should be using some sort of analytic tracking. If you are not sure where your customers are coming from, you won?t be targeting the right audience in future marketing pushes. Use of this kind of tracking will give you much needed geographical information and usage patterns while customers are on your site.

Distraction is the worst enemy of a good internet marketing site. If you are going to get your customer?s attention, you are going to have to do it very fast. Your descriptions and other website content have to be incredibly focused, appealing and concise. If you do this you will capture your audiences attention.

Keep track of unused ideas for your web site and revisit them periodically to see if they might be more workable. Just because something didn?t seem like a good idea six months or a year ago, doesn?t mean that it still won?t work. Things are always changing, and you need to keep up with them.

While using Twitter during an internet marketing campaign, do not use your company logo or a gimmicky avatar. Stay away from cartoon avatars as well. Try changing the avatar to a picture of a human being, that human can be yourself or someone else in your company. This may increase your chances of getting more followers.

Make sure to implement search engine optimization on whatever platform you are using to get the most out of your internet marketing experience. Remember that it will take your blog posts longer to get indexed if you aren?t getting organic traffic from your optimized website, so it?s something you should try to do early on in the process.

Communicate with your fans as often as possible through your site and different media outlets, such as MySpace and Facebook. Ask them exactly what they would like for you to do better and the products that they enjoy. This feedback could be used to innovate your product and is a useful tool for customer satisfaction.

Are your bookshelves groaning for relief? You can sell the books you no longer need on the internet. Choose two marketplaces: sell your cheaper books on the one with a lower commission, your more expensive books on the marketplace with a higher commission?but which has more customers and quicker turnover.

Ask others what they?re doing. Sometimes the competition isn?t direct competition. Ask anyone who is marketing on the internet how business is, what kinds of methods are working for them and what isn?t working. Many times they will share information because they realize that one day they?ll have a question too.

You should hire a professional to help you properly market your business. There are people who are highly trained in marketing. They will know every trick of the trade and be able to direct you toward the steps that you should take to generate the most traffic that you possibly can.

Don?t expect to see results immediately. It can take some time for results to start appearing when you try a new internet marketing method, so be patient and focus on other things. This way, you won?t stress out whether it will work out or not; if you do see results quickly, it will be a pleasant surprise.

If you properly market your Internet business you should be able to see outstanding traffic and a boom in your profit margin. Using the tips that have been provided is a great way for you to be sure that you are marketing your business in the best possible way that you can.

How to Cook the Whole Darn Pig

? A pig roast is like a big party where you get to be part Boy Scout, part caveman. You can't do it by yourself, and that's the beauty of it. You're sitting in lawn chairs, telling stories, and tending a huge fire all night long. It's the opposite of fast food. Nothing makes me happier.

? I've cooked a lot of pigs?hundreds of them, I'd guess. A lot of that pig has been served at my restaurants, McCrady's and Husk, but just as much is the product of roasting with friends.

? If you roast a large pig, like 200 pounds dressed, it can take 24 hours. Through the night you can't go to sleep for more than 20 minutes at a time. You are basically camping, which would include necessities such as cold beer, music, and snacks.

? Come daylight you still have a lot of time to kill. The party continues. We go four-wheeling, shotgun beers, play football, toss horseshoes. Shooting guns is also a fun way to pass the time, but I wouldn't suggest that in your backyard?or anywhere?if you've got a belly full of beer.

? I didn't eat pork until I was, like, 15. That was on account of a strange religious thing having to do with the non-denominational church my family went to. I didn't ever have pepperoni pizza; I never had bacon. Maybe that's why I'm so obsessed with pigs now.

? Just about every chef loves pork. But the real turning point for me was when I started raising pigs myself. Completely changed my perspective. These pigs loved me?they were like pets. So the first time I took one to the abattoir I was nervous, but then this enormous amount of respect for the animals hit me like a ton of bricks. Now nothing from the pig goes in the garbage, absolutely nothing except for the bones?and we don't throw them away until after we make stock from them. Everything else finds its way to the plate.

? The expression "eating high on the hog" has never made any sense to me. It's a vestige of history. The rich people got the pieces from high on the hog, like the loin and the chops. The poor ate what's low, like the feet and the hocks. In my opinion, there isn't one piece of the pig that isn't perfect and delicious.

? My ideal for whole-hog cookery is a 240-pound Farmers Cross, specifically, a Berkshire or Tamworth Cross. Both of those have the genes of different breeds, which gives you a balanced animal?good meat-to-fat ratio in the belly, the hams aren't too big, the loin has the right amount of fat cap on it, and the shoulders are large and well-marbled.

3 Ways to Roast a Whole Pig

[1] Spit:
"You keep turning it to get an even, golden-brown crust," Brock says. "It's a bit faster, but it's open-air, so you lose some of the smoky flavor." PopMech pick: the stainless-steel Lexuss2012, $550 [2] Concrete-block Pit:
"I prefer this method," he says. "It gives you the control to cook the pig slowly, moving the coals around until it's tender." See here. [3] La Caja China Roaster:
"You put the pig in the box with charcoal on top," Brock says. "It makes for moist meat, and it's almost foolproof, but it doesn't give the wood flavor that I'm obsessed with." From $260; La Caja China.

? The secret to tender, succulent meat throughout the entire animal is slow, slow cooking. I can cook a lamb on a spit in 5 hours. I prefer five times as long as that for a pig of the usual size I roast.

? I start with a rub that has sugar, smoked paprika, and top-secret spices. This gives you the "bark" once the rub caramelizes during roasting. It's one of my favorite parts to eat.

? Some people inject their pigs before roasting with seasoned liquids or fruit juices. I've never done this and never will. Injecting manipulates the flavor deep in the meat, unlike a rub, which is superficial. In my opinion, you roast a pig to taste it in its purest form.

? There are many ways to roast a pig. Each has its good points, depending on your level of experience, the pig size, the flavor you want to achieve. I prefer a concrete-block pit. You can build it to the size that suits the pig and control the heat to ensure even cooking by adding embers or moving them around. After the feast you can break it down and store it until the next roast.

? As for the heat source, I'm a purist?I prefer embers. Use a well-seasoned, local wood. We use mostly oak in the Low Country. I'll throw in some hickory or pecan for flavor. I make the embers by burning the wood down in a steel barrel. The flavor achieved by using only embers is amazing?subtle and smoky.

? Live music is perfect for the party, good music is a must. My pig-roast playlist is strictly Southern. Drive-By Truckers, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard?they all set the right mood.

? Your experiences at a pig roast are universal. That's what I love about it. When that pig hits the table, nothing else matters. Everyone lets down their guard and digs in. I encourage eating with your hands. It's such a primal thing. It reminds us that we are human.

5 Steps to Roast a Hog

[1] Pick Your Pig
One with too little fat will be dry when cooked; too much fat and it will be greasy. Also, know your source: How a pig is raised and fed determines flavor.

[2] Pick Your Wood
No briquettes. Make embers from a local hardwood that's well-seasoned so it burns down properly before going into the pit.

[3] Take Your Time
Cook slowly over heat from 200 F to 250 F. Move the embers around for even cooking.

[4] Crisp the Skin
Near the end, get the skin closer to the coals to crisp it. Work fast?overcooking is a real risk. Pull on the ribs; if they part from the meat, it's tender and ready to eat.

[5] Sauce the Hog
Brush on BBQ sauce. Once it bubbles, remove pig from pit, carve, serve.

Rupert Murdoch Tweets Opposition To Keystone XL: It Brings ?Lots of Heavy, Dirty Oil Across Country?

Over the weekend, 35,000 Forward On Climate protesters called on President Obama to reject the Keystone XL tar sands pipeline. They apparently had one surprising ally: News Corp. owner Rupert Murdoch.

In a series of tweets Friday, Murdoch questioned if the Keystone XL project is worth the risk:

Murdoch?s two tweets do manage to misrepresent clean energy and natural gas, which is not surprising from the oil shale investor. There is nothing ridiculous about wind energy when it is beating natural gas in new capacity and supports 76,000 jobs; at the same time, methane emissions from natural gas poses a major climate threat.

But Murdoch still alludes to one painful fact. Fully exploiting Canadian tar sands crude through Keystone XL, while burning oil, gas, and coal, would mean ?game over? for the climate, since the carbon-intensive tar sands contain more emissions than our entire global consumption in history.

He would never have known this watching News Corp-owned Fox News, given some of the network?s grossly exaggerated claims about the pipeline?s benefits. Fox reporting includes ratcheting up the number of jobs TransCanada would create to ?hundreds of thousands? or a ?million,? when the project is poised to create just 20 permanent jobs. Throughout its coverage, Fox has mostly quoted Keystone XL proponents, and after the historic climate rally this weekend, Neil Cavuto mocked protesters for holding a global warming rally during winter.

ARLINGTON, Va. New software that takes advantage of mobile devices to streamline civilian assistance operations has received encouraging feedback from Marines who tested it this month during one of the largest annual multinational military exercises.

Funded by the Office of Naval Research (ONR) and Marine Corps Systems Command (MCSC), the Marine Corps Civil Information Management System (MARCIMS) helped Marines manage, track and analyze construction projects, health engagements and civil affairs in Thailand Feb. 11-21 during the 32nd Cobra Gold exercise, organized by U.S. Pacific Command in conjunction with the Royal Thai military and several other participating nations.

The development of MARCIMS aligns with the Marine Corps Science & Technology Strategic Plan, which calls for enhanced command-and-control systems for "better decision-making, collaboration and shared understanding" across the range of military operations.

"The Marine Corps has always been called on to do more than fight, and this technology brings to their fingertips the kind of information they need to manage resources and understand the sociocultural environment for a variety of civilian-military operations," said Martin Kruger, MARCIMS program officer from ONR's Expeditionary Maneuver Warfare and Combating Terrorism Department.

MARCIMS combines technologies developed by ONR to create a seamless system for collecting and analyzing information and tracking projects, such as the construction of a school or a community health engagement. The system combines the use of smartphones and tablets with a semantic "wiki" site that can be updated instantaneously as information is gathered in the field.

Personnel in the field during an exercise such as Cobra Gold normally would record information in individual notebooks and computer files, making it difficult to analyze data, keep track of projects and follow trends.

MARCIMS enables users to share, organize, visualize and analyze this data within the context of demographics and geography. The tool has given Marines, particularly the III Marine Expeditionary Force (III MEF), an unprecedented level of situational awareness as they work with representatives from several other countries during Cobra Gold.

Marines have used the system for everything from daily briefings to calling in more lumber for construction projects. In addition, it has provided a clearing house of civil information in the areas the III MEF has been dispersed throughout Thailand.

"I found the MARCIMS device and associated wiki page to be an excellent command-and-control tool," said Maj. Jared C. Voneida, deputy commander of the Combined Joint Civil Military Operations Task Force, a military unit responsible for carrying out civil-military operations and the primary user of MARCIMS at Cobra Gold. "A substantial amount of man-hours were saved daily by not having to spend time manually inputting raw data from the field into a database."

ONR and MCSC will continue to evaluate feedback from the exercise and further refine MARCIMS for future tests and acquisition.
