New model to determine lifetime spending

Jan. 30, 2013 ? University of Virginia Darden School of Business research shows new, more effective ways to plan for retirement.

Every day, financial planners help future retirees determine how much they'll spend or "consume" each year of their lifetime. The answer lets individuals know how much they'll need to save to live comfortably. However, making plans without knowing how long you will live is a financial challenge. As the saying goes, "You can't take it with you when you die." At the same time, individuals do not want to outlive their retirement savings.

Darden Professors Samuel E. Bodily, John Tyler Professor of Business Administration, and Assistant Professor Casey Lichtendahl discussed what they believe to be a more effective preference model for the financial-planning problem in their award-winning research paper, "Preferences for Consumption Streams: Scale Invariance, Correlation Aversion and Delay Aversion Under Mortality Risk."

The professors demonstrate that people should put their money where their health is.

"People tend to 'under plan,'" said Bodily. "They plan to spend less at 65 years of age and spend more money when they are in their 80s. With this type of spending delay, individuals risk not getting to spend as much as they might like during their lifetimes."

To better determine consumption habits, a small but growing number of financial planners offer computer-based forecasting tools. The tools ask individuals to enter information about financial obligations, savings and assets. These "financial planning calculators" generate reports that guide individuals and their planners as they choose the best approach for growing retirement savings based on consumption during each phase of a retiree's life.

Bodily and Lichtendahl favor this approach, but identify one pitfall: The common financial model, which takes additive preferences into account, fails to address dependencies on uncertainties. It doesn't distinguish between situations in which consumption is all bad or all good versus situations in which there are some bad and some good years. Instead, the researchers developed the multiplicative-expo power utility (MEP), which accounts for risks and uncertainties. Using MEP can help financial planners better forecast their clients' retirement spending needs.

Past lab experiments that studied consumption preferences showed that most people are "correlation averse," meaning they prefer to have a mixture of bad and good years rather than all bad or all good years. One positive effect of using MEP is that it suggests that retirees spend more in their early retirement years when they are more likely to be healthy and able to consume more rather than later.

"We're taking raw preferences of individuals and using the information to make decisions about spending," said Lichtendahl. "This model has important implications for how planners and analysts advise individuals planning for retirement."

"With MEP, you can solve dynamic problems because you can take them apart in time," Bodily added. "The MEP form is general and can also help with decisions such as career choices, investment choices and insurance planning."

Earlier in the fall, they were chosen as finalists for the 2012 Decision Analysis Publication Award. The prize recognizes the best 2010 publication in "decision analysis, broadly defined." The members of the 2012 Publication Award Committee chose their work because it offered a significant impact on decision-making and business practice. Their research was published in the journal Operations Research. Bodily and Lichtendahl were recognized at the conference of the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences for receiving the award.

Last month, Bodily and Lichtendahl won the "Best Paper" Decision Analysis Special Recognition Award for their December 2012 paper in Decision Analysis on "Multiplicative Utilities for Health and Consumption." This paper builds upon the use of multiplicative utilities such as MEP to connect consumption habits with health status and future health considerations.

Bodily researches decision and risk analysis, strategy modeling and analysis, forecasting and lifetime consumption, and investment planning. He has written several books, a wide variety of journal articles in publications including Operations Research and Harvard Business Review and more than 120 cases and technical notes on quantitative analytics.

Lichtendahl teaches Quantitative Analysis courses in Darden's MBA program. His research focuses on eliciting, evaluating and combining probability forecasts for use in corporate and governmental decision-making situations. His other research interests include modeling consumption preferences for use in personal financial decisions.

In addition to advancing knowledge in the area of decision analysis and modeling, Bodily and Lichtendahl hope to modernize the way financial planners and wealth managers help individuals shape the quality of their older adult lives through more effective planning for retirement.

Stand Up Guys | Movie Reviews | Kelly Vance | East Bay Express

Al Pacino doesn't yell "Hoo-rah!" even once. He also fails to gun down any rival mobsters or police officers in a restaurant. Christopher Walken never plays Russian roulette. He ends up shooting only one or two people. Meanwhile, Alan Arkin actually manages to make himself dull. These are the sorts of frustrations we're up against in Stand Up Guys, one of the tiredest movies ever associated with those three actors.

Granted, the idea behind the movie is that newly paroled convict Val (Pacino), his former partner in crime Doc (Walken), and their wheel man Hirsch (Arkin) are old. Pacino is, in fact, 72; Walken is 69; and Arkin, pound for pound the brightest bulb in the lot, is a ripe 78. But there's a difference between making a film about three exhausted, washed-up men and having the actors playing the parts behave like extras in a zombie flick. There have been about three million movies in which senior citizens redeem themselves. Stand Up Guys may well be the creakiest.

Val gets sprung from the pen after 28 years. Doc meets him at the gate and they immediately visit a whorehouse, a convenience mart, a diner, a nightclub, and a hospital emergency room, in that order ? picking up Hirsch from a senior home to drive their stolen car. Every geriatric joke in existence, masculine division. But there's a conflict: Doc has been hired by ?ber-gangster Claphands (Mark Margolis) to assassinate Val before 10 a.m. the next day. So it's literally everyone's last go-round. Instead of The Bucket List, we could call it "The Fuck-It List."

It's a pleasure seeing former character-actor Fisher Stevens' name in the credits as director. He deserves a better screenplay than this. Still, it's perverse fun to watch three of the finest American character actors struggle through the wide-open spaces of this sleep aid. They'll get over it in time.

All The President's Plans

By MICHAEL FALCONE ( @michaelpfalcone )

NOTABLES:

OBAMA IN VEGAS: President Obama maps out his immigration plan at this afternoon in Las Vegas where, a senior administration official tells ABC's Reena Ninan, he will focus largely on what he's discussed before. The president won't put forward a bill - instead he'll support the Senate's principles outlined yesterday and explain what else needs to be done. The White House feels Las Vegas is a community symbolic of the growing Latino population in both the state and the nation and since immigration reform is a pledge the president made during the campaign, the White House says he wants to deliver.

EL DIABLO IS IN THE DETAILS: Even the senators who wrote the immigration reform proposal outlined yesterday admitted there's lots of work still ahead. One land mine: Some Republicans want to link getting green cards to whether the border is secure. Border security still a gray issue. If the Gang of Eight's efforts fall apart the president's team will step in with its own proposal, Ninan notes.

SECRET CONGRESSIONAL GROUP WORKING ON IMMIGRATION ALTERNATIVE: A separate bipartisan group of lawmakers in the House of Representatives is on the verge of finalizing its own designs for comprehensive immigration reform, ABC's John Parkinson reports. The discussions, which top aides close to the talks discussed on the condition that they not be identified, are described as "Washington's best-kept secret." Multiple sources say those involved in the talks include Democratic Reps. Xavier Becerra (California), Luis Gutierrez (Illinois), Zoe Lofgren (California), and Republican Reps. Mario Diaz-Balart (Florida), Sam Johnson (Texas) and John Carter (Texas). The House's not-yet-finalized proposal is expected to address five general areas of immigration reform, according to aides close to the negotiations. Secure the border, implement a permanent E-verify system nationwide, reform the visa system, address the predicament of how to handle immigrants already in the country illegally in a "fair" and "legal manner" while determining how to handle those who have applied for legal immigration and are currently waiting in line, and reform the immigration system for future applicants. http://abcn.ws/WnjOfh

THE ROUNDTABLE:

ABC's RICK KLEIN: What could possibly go wrong? The bipartisan Senate proposal is on the table, with boldfaced names like McCain, Rubio, Graham, Schumer, Durbin, and Menendez signed on. The House isn't far behind. And the president takes up the mantle himself today, as he lobbies the public to force action at last on immigration reform ? Wait, this could get interesting, after all. The White House has had mixed results with letting Congress handle the details of much of anything. But these are the kinds of details that members of Congress from both parties have spent months if not years wrestling through; witness the twin failures of immigration reform, in 2006 and 2007, under the leadership of a different president. The real question for the White House: Will heavy involvement - and pushing in directions the Gang of Eight doesn't want to go - be more harmful for helpful?

ABC's MICHAEL FALCONE: At yesterday's bi-partisan news conference announcing the Gang of Eight's immigration reform principles, Sen. John McCain's answer about why Republicans were so eager to move on the issue was telling. "Elections, elections," the Arizona senator said. "The Republican Party is losing the support of our Hispanic citizens." He's right: Hispanic voters are becoming a larger share of the electorate and GOP presidential candidate, Mitt Romney, won just 27 percent of the vote among the group compared to 71 percent who supported President Obama. There was also something striking about watching Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, a member of the immigration reform group, launch into Spanish during the press conference. Neither Rubio's language skills nor his familiarity with the immigration issue are breaking news, but I imagine it will give other potential 2016 Republicans pause.

ABC's SHUSHANNAH WALSHE: Currently, the prevailing theory about Sarah Palin is that because she doesn't have the megaphone of Fox News anymore, the "Palin moment" is now officially over. It might be true, but there have been so many "Ends of Sarah Palin" that it's almost hard to keep track. She was over when she lost the 2008 campaign, she was over when she quit the Alaska governorship, she was over when she decided to do a reality show, she was over when she decided not to run for president. Now she's over because she severed her ties with Fox. But the reality is different. Even after she decided to resign as governor and to pass up a 2012 presidential bid, people who both love her and hate her still just couldn't get enough information about her. Palin still got an incredible amount of coverage and her voice was heard - loud and clear. It's yet another example of what she's able to pull off that others who came before or after just aren't: She's been written off since Day One, but she keeps coming back.

ABC's JASON RYAN: The FBI has released new gun background check data yesterday showing that the week after the Newtown massacre (December 14, 2012) was the busiest for gun background checks ever, followed by the week President Obama announced new gun control proposals on January 16, 2013. As ABC News has reported, gun sales have been booming since Newtown. After previously denying journalists access to gun data, National Instant Check System figures show that overall in December 2012 there were more than 2.78 million background checks carried out to purchase firearms surpassing the previous record from November 2012 when more than 2 million checks were performed. The number of total sales during the first month of the new year will be released in the first few days of February.

VIDEO OF THE DAY: MEET DEFIANT DEMOCRAT, HEIDI HEITKAMP. Sen. Heidi Heitkamp, D-N.D., defied the odds in November when she won the closest senate race in the country, and now that she's arrived in Washington, she's defiant as ever. But now, instead of defying the pollsters, she's defying the Democratic caucus by taking divergent opinions on issues central to the President Obama's second term agenda, ranging from gun control to the environment. Heitkamp, who says growing the economy is her top priority, is concerned that the president is changing his focus to issues like climate change and gun control. "I think, you know the one thing that has gotten lost by everyone is one of the best ways that we can perform here is by getting people back to work, making sure that this economic recovery, slow as it is, gets amped up and moves forward," Heitkamp tells ABC's Jonathan Karl, host of "Politics Confidential." "It's one of the reasons why I've been such a big proponent of the Keystone Pipeline. There's a shovel ready, private sector jobs program, good paying jobs." WATCH: http://yhoo.it/TQOxTJ

BUZZ

IMMIGRATION REFORM PLAN INCLUDES A PATHWAY TO CITIZENSHIP. The Senate's plan does not grant undocumented immigrants automatic "amnesty," rather it requires them to go through an arduous process that includes undergoing a background check, paying fines, back taxes and learning English and American civics over the course of a number of years, reports ABC-Univision's Jordan Fabian. The new law would grant eligible undocumented immigrants permission to live and work in the U.S. legally, but would not confer permanent legal status, or a green card, until the border is deemed to be secure. Young people brought into the U.S. illegally as minors and some agricultural workers would face an easier path to citizenship. "We will never put these people on a path to citizenship until we have secured the border," New York Sen. Chuck Schumer said yesterday. Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., who helped lead the last effort on a comprehensive immigration bill in 2007 said, "We have been too content for too long to allow individuals to mow our lawns, grow our food, clean our homes, and even watch our children while not affording them any of the benefits that make our country so great." http://abcn.ws/YBGY4Q

OBAMA TALKS GUN VIOLENCE WITH POLICE CHIEFS. President Obama is enlisting the help of police chiefs from communities devastated by mass shootings as he continues a public push for Congress to act on his proposals to curb gun violence, ABC's Mary Bruce notes. "No group is more important for us to listen to than our law enforcement officials," the president told reporters before a White House meeting yesterday with sheriffs and police chiefs from across the country. "They are where the rubber hits the road." The president and members of his cabinet met with the police chiefs who responded to the deadly shootings in Aurora, Colo., Oak Creek, Wis., and Newtown, Conn, along with representatives from the Major Cities Chiefs Police Association and the Major County Sheriffs' Association. "I welcome this opportunity to work with them; to hear their views in terms of what will make the biggest difference to prevent something like Newtown or Oak Creek from happening again," Obama said.

CHICK-FIL-A CEO AND GAY ACTIVIST FIND COMMON GROUND. The leader of a national gay-rights group says he's coming out-as a friend of Chick-fil-A CEO Dan Cathy, ABC's Chris Good reports. "I've gotten to know Dan, he's gotten to know me. He's shared concerns about young people, about Chick-fil-A being used for certain purposes," Shane Windmeyer, executive director of Campus Pride, told ABC News. Last year, Cathy sparked a national controversy by telling a radio host that "we're inviting God's judgment on our nation when we shake our fist at him and say we know better than you as to what constitutes a marriage. And I pray God's mercy on our generation that has such a prideful, arrogant attitude that thinks we have the audacity to redefine what marriage is all about." Windmeyer said that Cathy called him last year, during the heat of the controversy that led national gay-rights groups to protest Chick-fil-A. Cathy reached out seeking advice and understanding, Windmeyer said. Windmeyer was a guest of Cathy's at this year's Chick-fil-A Bowl between LSU and Clemson at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta. The activist also says Chick-fil-A has stopped donating to anti-gay groups, according to his review of the company's 990 tax forms. http://abcn.ws/WxuchC

GOVERNMENT WASTE IN THE SPOTLIGHT. The Government Accountability Office is due to produce its biannual report on the areas of the government that present the highest risk for squandering tax payer dollars in the next couple weeks. Though the GAO does not preview this list ahead of time, ABC's Sarah Parnass takes a look at what might be targeted: http://abcn.ws/113uncb

Looking Old May Signal Heart Trouble

Have you seen the Internet ads for the 53-year-old mom who looks 27? Not only does she look better than people who actually show their age, a new Danish study has found there's a good chance she'll live longer, too.

The older you look, the worse shape your heart is in, the authors of the ongoing Copenhagen Heart Study concluded.

The study, which began in 1976, followed 11,000 men and women for 35 years to find the connection between physical appearance and heart health.

Originally, the investigators paid attention to seven telltale signs of aging. They eventually found that wrinkles, gray hair and cholesterol deposits on the cornea of the eye were all part of the inevitable wear and tear on the body rather than predictors of bad health.

"These are signs of physical aging, not necessarily biological aging," said the study's lead investigator, Dr. Anne Tybaerg-Hansen.

That left four physical traits - a receding hairline, baldness on top of the head, earlobe creases and yellow, fatty deposits around the eyelid - as visible evidence of heart disease. People with at least three of these markers for aging had a 57 percent increased risk for heart attack and a 39 percent increased risk for heart disease.

When the researchers considered gender separately, they found that hair loss in women was not linked with an increased risk of heart disease. However, the men with receding hairlines showed a 40 percent higher risk in men with hair loss than those without.

Overall, the group for whom the new results raises a red flag was men between ages 70 and 79. In this group, 45 percent of those with all four aging signs developed heart disease, compared to 31 percent of those with none of the four.

The markers used in the study are often cited as predictors of heart disease. Scientists have long speculated that male-pattern baldness may be linked to high levels of testosterone, which, in turn, seem to be associated with a higher incidence of heart disease.

Experts have suspected for decades that earlobe creases and cholesterol buildup on the eye are signs of heart trouble.

Wrinkles, which weren't associated with heart health in the study, have been tied to poor bone health. Last year, a Yale study found women with deeply furrowed brows in early menopause may also have weak bones.

Tabaerg-Hansen said her research gave no clear answers as to why the four physical traits were so closely associated with the risk of heart disease. The next step would be to try to find out why they're connected and to see if they might also predict other diseases of aging, such as cancer.

Tabaerg-Hansen added that there's no reason physicians can't look out for these signs right now as they assess which of their patients are in poor cardiovascular health.

"This new study should give clinicians greater incentive to treat patients who show these physical signs," she said. "They could suggest lifestyle changes and therapies for those who have the appearance of higher risk."

The study results were presented at this week's American Heart Association scientific meeting in Los Angeles. They have not yet been published.

'First time' may predict lifelong sexual satisfaction

Jan. 28, 2013 ? Research conducted by Matthew Shaffer, a doctoral psychology student at UT and C. Veronica Smith, an assistant psychology professor at the University of Mississippi, reveals that the first sexual experience can set the tone for the rest of one's sexual life.

The study is published in the Journal of Sex and Marital Therapy and is the first to look at whether the circumstances of losing one's virginity have lasting consequences.

"The loss of virginity is often viewed as an important milestone in human development, signifying a transition to adulthood," said Shaffer. "However, it has not been studied in this capacity. We wanted to see the influence it may have related to emotional and physical development."

The researchers examined how first-time sexual satisfaction impacts long-term sexual function as well as how first-time physical and emotional responses affect long-term sexual experiences. They found that positive first-time experiences were predictive of physical and emotional satisfaction. Specifically, those who felt loved and respected by their partner found later encounters more emotionally satisfying.

The researchers asked 331 young men and women about how they lost their virginity. The anonymous participants ranked the experience according to emotions related to anxiety, contentment and regret. They also answered questions about their sex life using scales measuring sense of control, satisfaction and well-being. Finally, the participants filled out a diary for two weeks describing each sexual experience.

A series of analyses revealed those who were most emotionally and physically satisfied the first time found their sex lives the most fulfilling. Those who reported higher levels of anxiety and negativity with the first time reported lower overall sexual functioning.

"While this study doesn't prove that a better first time makes for a better sex life in general, a person's experience of losing their virginity may set the pattern for years to come," said Shaffer.

Shaffer suggests that a first-time sexual experience may create a general pattern of thought and behavior that guides sexual experiences and understanding of information concerning sexuality.

Evolution inspires more efficient solar cell design

Monday, January 28, 2013

The sun's energy is virtually limitless, but harnessing its electricity with today's single-crystal silicon solar cells is extremely expensive ? 10 times pricier than coal, according to some estimates. Organic solar cells ? polymer solar cells that use organic materials to absorb light and convert it into electricity ? could be a solution, but current designs suffer because polymers have less-than-optimal electrical properties.

Researchers at Northwestern University have now developed a new design for organic solar cells that could lead to more efficient, less expensive solar power. Instead of attempting to increase efficiency by altering the thickness of the solar cell's polymer layer ? a tactic that has preciously garnered mixed results ? the researchers sought to design the geometric pattern of the scattering layer to maximize the amount of time light remained trapped within the cell.

Using a mathematical search algorithm based on natural evolution, the researchers pinpointed a specific geometrical pattern that is optimal for capturing and holding light in thin-cell organic solar cells.

The resulting design exhibited a three-fold increase over the Yablonovitch Limit, a thermodynamic limit developed in the 1980s that statistically describes how long a photon can be trapped in a semiconductor.

A paper about the results, "Highly Efficient Light-Trapping Structure Design Inspired by Natural Evolution," was published January 3 in Scientific Reports, a publication of Nature.

In the newly designed organic solar cell, light first enters a 100-nanometer-thick "scattering layer," a geometrically-patterned dielectric layer designed to maximize the amount of light transmitted into the cell. The light is then transmitted to the active layer, where it is converted into electricity.

"We wanted to determine the geometry for the scattering layer that would give us optimal performance," said Cheng Sun, assistant professor of mechanical engineering in Northwestern's McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science and co-author of the paper. "But with so many possibilities, it's difficult to know where to start, so we looked to laws of natural selection to guide us."

The researchers employed a genetic algorithm, a search process that mimics the process of natural evolution, explained Wei Chen, Wilson-Cook Professor in Engineering Design and professor of mechanical engineering at McCormick and co-investigator of the research.

"Due to the highly nonlinear and irregular behavior of the system, you must use an intelligent approach to find the optimal solution," Chen said. "Our approach is based on the biologically evolutionary process of survival of the fittest."

The researchers began with dozens of random design elements, then "mated" and analyzed their offspring to determine their particular light-trapping performance. This process was carried out over more than 20 generations and also accounted for evolutionary principles of crossover and genetic mutation.

The resulting pattern will be fabricated with partners at Argonne National Laboratory.

Tiger Woods Leads Farmers Insurance Open At Torrey Pines After ...

By Sean Martin, Golfweek

SAN DIEGO ? Torrey Pines may be Tiger Woods? territory, but he hasn?t won here since 2008. His performance for much of Sunday at the Farmers Insurance Open was reminiscent of his play during those simpler years.

Woods shot 69 to take a four-shot lead into the final round, which will begin later Sunday and be completed Monday. He was six strokes ahead until he reached the par-5 18th, which he bogeyed after finding a bunker off the tee and with his third shot. Brad Fritsch, a 35-year-old rookie off the Web.com Tour, is Woods? closest pursuer. He birdied No. 18 to reach 10 under par. Fritsch is trying to extend this streak: a 2012 Web.com Tour graduate has finished first or second in each of the season's first two full-field events.

Woods was victorious the last time he played on a Monday at Torrey Pines. That was in the 2008 U.S. Open, where he needed 19 holes to dispatch of Rocco Mediate.

This is Woods' largest 54-hole lead since the 2009 BMW Championship. Of course, he?s only held the third-round lead once since then as he?s gone through his personal crisis and a prolonged rebuilding process.

He missed just two fairways on the front nine Sunday, often twirling his driver as another ball found the fairway. He missed just three greens, as well. Four of Woods? five birdies came on putts of 3 feet or less. The other was completed by a 6-foot putt.

If Woods hangs on, it will be his eighth PGA Tour victory at Torrey Pines. He?s won the Farmers Insurance Open six times, as well as that 2008 U.S. Open. He?s won a major in five of the six seasons during which he won the Farmers Insurance Open. Of course, those victories came during some of his most successful seasons. No one knows what this season holds for Woods, but he?s off to a good start in his PGA Tour debut.

How Tablets and Smartphones benefit Individuals with Special Needs

All too often we take everyday things for granted; ordering lunch from a menu, reading a book, typing an email. Yet there are many people that can't enjoy completing these everyday tasks. For example, part of what is so difficult in the life of someone with autism is that even though they can think and feel and experience most of the same things the rest of us do, they cannot communicate it orally. They cannot physically say that they are too hot, cold or hungry. They lack the ability to communicate the most basic of things you or I might remark about countless times a day.

Recently I watched a segment on 60 minutes where Leslie Stahl spent time with a few persons with autism as well as a therapist and some teachers. The results of what an iPad could do for a person with autism could bring a tear to your eye, especially when you don't realize how difficult it is for them to verbalize things that we take for granted.?

One of the apps suggested on the 60 minutes segment was called Prologuo2Go. The autistic male in the segment was able to express things verbally that he could never do before. It was awesome to see his face light up when he was able to order breakfast from the waitress.?

Proloquo2Go?

Proloquo2Go? is an award-winning Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) solution for iPad, iPhone and iPod touch for people who have difficulty speaking or cannot speak at all.

Proloquo2Go can be adapted to suit the needs of a wide range of users with varying literacy levels. Featuring natural-sounding voices, speech can be generated by tapping buttons with symbols or typing using the on-screen keyboard with word prediction. Proloquo2Go continues to revolutionize the world of mobile AAC, allowing individuals to communicate at home, in school, at work, in the community, anywhere, anytime.

You may be thinking, ?What about the iPhone??? Apple has a bunch of different features that are helpful to those who are visually/hearing impaired.

Aside from some of the obvious features like Siri, the virtual assistant, Apple has some not so obvious tricks up their sleeve.? Most of these features you?ll need to activate under the Settings>General>Accessibility section.?

One of the best features, at least I think so, is under the ringtone section.? If you have a hard time hearing a ringtone, you can set up custom vibrations so your favorite contacts can have their own pattern.? They have a few that you can play around with and you can even create some of your own.? There?s also an option to have your LED camera light to flash with an incoming call.?

Another feature, particularly for those who may be deaf in one ear, is Mono Audio.? This will take any music that is in a stereo format and pipe it through one ear bud.? Now you can have it all in one ear or you can have a stronger sound going into the left or the right.? Either way, it?ll let you get the full effect of the music.?

Visually speaking, there are some awesome features like Zoom.? This feature, no matter if you're in a third party or an Apple app, will let you zoom in on the page all the way up to 500%.? There is also a section to amplify your text which ranges from normal font to 56pt font.? Using Voice Over, everything on the screen will be spoken to you, from reading text to trying to find an app, when you click on a part of the screen, it will tell you exactly what it is.?

Technology has some wonderful benefits for everyone.

Team flag waves as 49ers arrive

NEW ORLEANS (AP) ? With a team flag waving from an open window of their chartered plane, the San Francisco 49ers arrived at their first Super Bowl in 18 years on Sunday.

The players walked off the airplane in a businesslike manner ? no video recorders or cameras, no waves to onlookers. Quarterback Colin Kaepernick, wearing a red wool cap sporting "49ers" on it, mouthed the words to a song on his head phones as he calmly walked on the tarmac.

Most of the team's veteran players disembarked first, including center Jonathan Goodwin, who won a Super Bowl three years ago with the Saints.

The 49ers will play Baltimore next Sunday, seeking their sixth Super Bowl crown but first since the 1994 season. The Ravens arrive Monday.

Boost Your Business With Internet Marketing Tips | One Way Links ...

When you begin your business online, your first step for success should be, training yourself on the top internet marketing techniques, in order to get your business noticed. Knowing how to market your business online is very important to your bottom line. To jumpstart your business, here are some top tips that are sure to help move the revenue needle.

Site-wide links should not be used. In the latest internet marketing algorithm changes they have become highly depreciated, and may even lead to penalization. There should only be one site-wide link for every forty to fifty unique links. It is better to be safe then sorry with your links.

If you do not have a lot of time available to answer customers? questions individually, you should compile some of the ones that are asked a lot into a FAQ page. That way you will not receive as many inquiries since a lot of what they want to know will always be available to them.

On your site, make sure that you highlight not only the top sellers, but also the products that are not performing as well in sales. This is your chance to give your customers incentive to purchase these products and to shoot down any misconceptions that they may have about them.

Don?t forget the bad with the good. To gain the trust of your consumers, always remember to tell them anything negative about your product. Selling a consumer something without telling them about the flaws is a quick way to get complaints and returned product. To keep your sales final, tell the truth.

Turn your advertising into an article to really reach out to your target audiences. People use search engines to pull up ?how to? articles every day, so make your website useful and boost your search rankings at the same time. Custom content with your advertising cleverly embedded is a great way to give your website exposure.

Develop a strategy that focuses on, not only attracting new customers, but keeping the clients that you already have. Offer incentives and reasons why your current clients should stay with you, so that you can maximize your overall profits and keep everyone happy. This is an effective way to improve your visibility as an organization.

When marketing a product online, change up the wording of your ad copy periodically to see what draws in more visitors. Saying ?two days? instead of ?48 hours? could drastically affect the customer base you draw in for your product, as one example. In addition, changing the wording helps raise your search engine rankings, as it is seen as new content.

Use the word ?important? in your Internet advertising. ?Important? is a very important word to use since people don?t want to ever miss out on anything that might be important. It?s an eye-catching word, and you should use it when you can to draw customers to the ads on your site.

Even though they are print media, business cards are an important part of your Internet marketing strategy. Every time you hand a potential customer your business card, you have the opportunity to direct them to your website. Be sure the URL for your site is printed on your business cards.

These tips offer you a solid foundation from which to grow your business online. These tips will help build your buzz and ultimately, help generate revenue for your company, no matter if your company is product-driven or services-related. Now is the time to take the next step and utilize these techniques and investigate more opportunities, so that you can take your internet marketing to the next level.

Consider These Ideas To Get Started With Internet Marketing ...

If you are trying to find a way to increase your customer base and boost your profits, internet marketing could be the answer. Internet marketing, which encompasses a variety of different tactics and techniques, provides a highly effective means of exposing your product or services to a wider audience. The advice in this article will guide you to turning your Internet marketing aspirations into realistic and successful business practices.

Partner with other online businesses to create interesting combination deals that will attract customers and help you share your customer bases. This tactic is a sound strategy to create connections between multiple markets. This has a cumulative effect of boosting overall revenue. A good example of this is an online booking agent, which has negotiated reduced prices for people who book hotels, airfare and car rentals in one transaction. This is the perfect strategy for allying two or more companies which are related, but not competitors.

A good tip for your site is to have a place where customers can interact with one another. This helps your site feel like a group or club instead of simply a place to purchase items. This may help people feel as though they belong to a special club.

A friendly looking 500 error page can be very helpful. Visitors will see this page when something goes haywire with your site?s automated database code. Avoid the typical basic error message that lacks any real information. Instead, inform your visitors that you are working on a fix to their problem using a more creative webpage message that fits the format of your site.

Try giving free incentives to get more business. Pampering customers is just as effective online as it is in brick and mortar stores.

Including some samples or some discount coupons with the product you ship is a good idea. Just make sure the samples and coupons somehow tie into the product you shipped. This gives your customers a good reason to return, and also shows that you appreciate their business.

Creating viral videos, with tags of course, is a great way to generate interest and will really help your internet marketing strategy. Don?t forget to put a link leading to your site in the video?s description. You will see a dramatic increase in the number of regular visitors who come to your site.

You can assess the results of online marketing campaigns with sophisticated programs that measure the sales versus the number of visitors to your site. Most companies have add-ons and tools that will help you track all of your activity.

You want to put ads all over the Internet to give yourself as much exposure as possible. Services such as Google AdSense are a way to do this. Doing this permits you to enjoy high levels of marketing for an affordable price and a limited amount of effort.

Your customers can be offered a subscription of things they purchase. You could entice them by offering a discount for agreeing to receive a product delivery each month.

Press releases are effective Internet marketing tools. With a well-written press release, that offers clear and informative content, you can find multiple sources that will publish it and open it to niche markets. This can be an easy way to boost your profile.

Your online business should not be a full-time job until it is really successful. As you progress consider making a career out of Internet marketing.

You could add some user polls alongside your specific content to get readers? views and feedback. Acknowledging and implementing your users? ideas helps to build a relationship with your audience.

You need to be confident in the quality of your products or services. Having a great marketing strategy will not provide long term success for something that is of low quailty. A first-rate product will go a long way towards increasing your sales profits.

Focus on a single, overarching goal for your website, then pursue it relentlessly. Determine the type of content you would like to write as well as the directories you want to submit to. Make sure this content is adapted to your audience, and encourage people to share these articles with their friends. You must be sure to follow their rules to ensure that your submission will be accepted.

Valuable content is always the starting point of any successful Internet marketing campaign. Make sure you review your content often to ensure it is presenting the right message to your customers. It can also be helpful to have other people take a look at your content. A fresh perspective can be invaluable to your evaluation process. Lastly, make sure you check the grammar and spelling of your content in order to assure there are no errors.

As you now know, a well-designed article marketing strategy can help your business to connect with members of its target market. As you become more familiar with the various ways Internet marketing can be used, you can custom design your campaigns to suit your audience perfectly. Take advantage of the information is this article to improve your business.

One of the simplest ways to turn mlm lead generation systems into a solid business plan is to find a number of people, systems or even marketing designs who are presently attaining the outcomes you wish and put on your detective thinking cap. Research their marketing plan and find out precisely who their target market is, how they are approaching them, exactly what they they are delivering their customers and potential clients to (just what type of discussion ? direct mail, online, offline, webinar, audio, video) and just how are they following up to close the deal and collect a decision. Then merely do the exact same things in the same way.

My Child Has Autism ? What Now? | Natural Holistic Health Blog

When we become parents, we want the best for our children.? This is especially true for their health.? We view sonograms anxiously before they?re born, and we await word from the doctor that everything is as it should be when they arrive in this world.? We take heed of every little cough and sneeze in an effort to keep them healthy.? That?s one of the many reasons that a diagnosis of autism is so devastating.

Children with autism may display enough signs for a clear diagnosis before one year of age, and almost always do so by the time they?re three years old.? The news that a child is autistic can feel devastating, but it doesn?t have to be.? If we can keep our presence of mind, we can explore the options and get the best possible treatment for our children.? With proper care, many autistic children can grow up to be independent and well-adjusted adults.

It?s hard to know exactly what to do if you?ve never been down this road before.? Here are some tips to get you going in the right direction.

* Understand where your child is on the autism spectrum.? The term ?autism? is actually used interchangeably with several related disorders, each one with its own characteristics.? Some forms of autism are mild enough that they won?t make a big difference in a child?s life, while others require more treatment.? If you?re not sure where your child stands, talk to his doctor about it.? And if he doesn?t explain it sufficiently, consider seeing another one.

* Learn about treatment options.? There is currently no cure, but there are many treatment options that can produce favorable results.? Therapy can improve an autistic child?s language and social skills, and medication can help alleviate emotional and physical symptoms.

* Get support.? Raising an autistic child can be very trying, draining parents both physically and emotionally.? Counseling and respite care can help parents cope with the challenges.

* Make sure the needs of your other children are met.? Being the sibling of an autistic child presents its own unique challenges.? Siblings may resent the extra attention the autistic child requires, and they may become frustrated with the questions and misunderstanding of others.? Making special time for siblings and providing the opportunity for counseling will help them deal with these issues, and maybe even strengthen their relationships with their autistic brother or sister.

* Stay informed about new developments in the fight against autism.? Autism still isn?t well understood by doctors, but research is beginning to provide some answers and bring forth ideas for new treatments.? Staying on top of the latest autism news can give parents hope and encouragement.

We Recommend:

Since it is a spectrum disorder, autism affects children in different ways, and no two autistic children are exactly alike. This makes things very confusing for parents who are battling to come to terms with what is best for their child, as signs of autism vary greatly. It may be helpful to devise an autism symptoms checklist to aid in diagnosing the disorder.

While there is a place for prescription medication in certain cases of autism, careful consideration and caution should be taken due to possible side effects. There are also natural treatments for this disorder, including herbal and homeopathic answers which can help maintain harmony, health, and systemic balance in the brain and nervous system, without side effects or sedation.

MindSoothe ? Promotes balanced mood and feelings, as well as healthy levels of serotonin and other neurotransmitters

PureCalm ? Aids nervous system in stress resistance for balanced moods and feelings of well being

Focus Formula ? Helps maintain optimal mental focus, concentration, attention span and memory function.

Tula Tantrum Tamer ? Helps reduce tantrums, soothe fiery tempers and reduce frustration in young children

What will Michelle Obama do with four more years?

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Michelle Obama has a new look, both in person and online, and with the president's re-election, she has four more years as first lady, too.

That's got many people wondering: What will she do with them?

Take on a new cause? Travel more? Trace the path of another first lady and keep the Obama political brand alive by running for office?

The answers are to be determined.

The first lady is trying to figure out what comes next for this self-described "mom in chief" who also is a champion of healthier eating, an advocate for military families, a fitness buff and the best-selling author of a book about her White House garden.

For certain, she'll press ahead with her well-publicized efforts to reduce childhood obesity and rally the country around its service members.

"But beyond that, the first lady is exploring ways that she can make a real difference for Americans, not just for these next four years, but for years to come," said Kristina Schake, Mrs. Obama's communications director.

Here are five areas to watch.

___

NEW ISSUES

Will she take on a new cause? It's possible.

When Parade magazine asked last year whether she'd take up any new issues, Mrs. Obama identified women's health issues. "How do we strengthen families and make them healthier, an issue not just in America but around the world," she said.

Her marquee causes ? the "Let's Move" campaign against childhood obesity and the "Joining Forces" effort to help military families ? took a back seat last fall as she campaigned doggedly for President Barack Obama's re-election.

Look for her to begin publicizing those efforts anew.

Do not expect to see Mrs. Obama push more contentious issues such as gun control or immigration, both second-term priorities for the president. Her public approval rating was 73 percent in a December poll by CNN and she'd like to keep it there.

Some feminists remain unhappy that the Ivy League-educated lawyer hasn't used her position to champion what they view as more substantive issues.

Robert Watson, an American studies professor at Lynn University, said he hopes Mrs. Obama will use her popularity to pivot away from the "velvet-glove" issues first ladies typically embrace and say, "I'm swinging for the fence."

___

MALIA AND SASHA

Obama's daughters are older and will be in full teenage mode by the summer of 2014. Malia is already there at 14; sister Sasha is 11.

Both the president and first lady sometimes talk about the girls' busy lives and how they don't want to spend much time with their parents anymore.

Could having older, more independent children free Mrs. Obama to pursue other interests? Some first lady watchers say that's unlikely. After all, the teenage years are often full of angst about dating, proms, learning how to drive, going to college and so on.

"Michelle has made such a public statement about being the 'mom in chief' that it's hard to see her saying, 'Go ahead girls, here's the limo,'" Watson said.

Malia will graduate from high school during Obama's final year in office, in 2016, and probably trade the White House for a college dorm. She and her parents will have to navigate the college application process and campus tours. Sasha will be in high school.

___

TRAVEL

Presidents and first ladies often step up the pace of international travel in the second term. But it seems unlikely that Obama could make such a pivot just yet, with the U.S. public still so concerned about the economy, unemployment and government spending.

One option would be to send Mrs. Obama abroad in his place.

The first lady is popular overseas and has been well-received outside the U.S., including in India, where she accompanied the president in 2010, and in Mexico, also in 2010, and in South Africa and Botswana in 2011, the only countries she has visited alone as first lady.

She and Vice President Joe Biden's wife, Jill, traveled together to Haiti after the massive earthquake there in January 2010.

Mrs. Obama also went to Spain in the summer of 2010 on a personal trip with friends and daughter Sasha, but her stay at a luxury resort on the Costa del Sol wasn't well-received back home, raising questions about the cost and wisdom of taking such a trip during tough economic times.

Laura Bush pursued a grueling foreign travel schedule during George W. Bush's second term. She visited 77 countries in eight years as first lady, including with the president, but 67 of those trips came during the second term, including solo stops in Afghanistan and Saudi Arabia, according to Anita McBride, her then-chief of staff who runs American University's first ladies program.

Hillary Rodham Clinton also traveled abroad extensively during Bill Clinton's second term.

___

RUN FOR PUBLIC OFFICE

Will she or won't she? Despite Mrs. Obama's many denials of interest in seeking elected office herself, the question keeps getting asked. A recent survey found her to be more popular than Mark Kirk, the Republican senator from her home state of Illinois, in a hypothetical matchup.

"I have no interest in politics. Never have, never will," the first lady said last year on ABC's "The View."

But even those who at one time say "never" can later change their minds.

Hillary Clinton gave the same answer in 1995 when asked if she'd ever run for public office, says Myra Gutin, who studies first ladies at Rider University. But five years later, as her husband's presidency was ending, there was Clinton campaigning across New York for a Senate seat.

She won, used her time in the Senate as a springboard for her 2008 presidential campaign but lost the Democratic nomination to Barack Obama. She became his secretary of state but is departing soon amid feverish speculation that she will run for president in 2016.

Mrs. Obama will be young ? 53 years old ? when her husband leaves office in January 2017, and will have a range of options ahead of her. Friends say she has always believed there are ways to serve the country without running for office.

___

PERSONAL STYLE

Look for the first lady to continue to be a fashion trendsetter. Everything from her hair to her clothes is scrutinized, with some clothing pieces selling out quickly after she's seen wearing them.

Her new bangs became the talk of this town immediately after she went public with them on her 49th birthday, a few days before the president began his second term. Even the president said his wife's haircut was "the most significant event" of inaugural weekend and gave his approval.

Mrs. Obama also won largely positive reviews for her inaugural wardrobe: Reed Krakoff and Thom Browne by day, and Michael Kors and Jason Wu by night. Wu designed her red chiffon and velvet ball gown. He also designed the white ball gown she wore four years ago.

She also has a new presence on Twitter ? (at)FLOTUS.

Colorado SBA director offers help in addressing small business ...

Greg Lopez knows he can?t personally solve every problem facing small businesses in Colorado.

What the director of the Colorado District Office of the U.S. Small Business Administration can do, though, is talk to those who could help. And the requests, complaints and suggestions he passes along are taken seriously, he said. ?One of the biggest tools I have at the SBA is the power of influence.?

The SBA itself responds to the needs of small businesses in the lending and assistance programs it offers, Lopez told a group of small business owners during an informal discussion in Grand Junction. ?I?m here to serve you. Hold me accountable to that.?

The meeting at the Business Incubator Center was part of a swing through Western Colorado for Lopez and James Van Horn, a lender relations specialist with the SBA Colorado District Office in Denver.

Most of the discussion in Grand Junction involved various aspects of SBA loan guarantee programs and access to capital for small businesses.

The SBA doesn?t make direct loans. By guaranteeing repayment on a portion of the loans, however, the federal agency enables banks and other lenders to extend financing to small businesses that might not qualify under conventional terms.

In Colorado, the SBA backed nearly 1,300 loans worth a total of almost $559 million during the 2012 fiscal year. Of those totals, 25 loans worth a collective $5.8 million were issued in Mesa County.

One small business owner who attended the Grand Junction meeting told Lopez he?s been approved for loans through both the SBA 7 (a) and 504 programs. But he?s concerned the cost of the project he?s financing has increased during the 12 to 14 months it took to receive the commitment.

Lopez said the SBA has control over many portions of loan processing, but not the background checks of borrowers conducted by the FBI.

There?s a possibility, though, the SBA could take on that function itself and complete it more quickly.

Van Horn said it also could be possible to adjust the terms of the loan to provide additional financing.

Lopez said it?s important for small business borrowers who encounter delays to communicate with their lenders and the SBA. ?If it takes too long, reach out to us.?

Other aspects of the SBA loan guarantee programs were questioned at the meeting, including 20-year terms for repayment. Extending those terms could help borrowers.

Pat Berry, a loan officer with the Small Business Finance Corp. in Grand Junction, suggested the SBA reinstate a program allowing borrowers to refinance traditional commercial loans through the 504 program.

Lopez said the SBA has considered and changed many provisions of its loan guarantee programs, increasing the maximum amounts and guarantee levels and for a time even waiving fees.

Jon Maraschin, executive director of the Business Incubator Center and a former commercial banker, said access to capital remains a problem for entrepreneurs who want to start or expand ventures.

More stringent regulations make it difficult for bankings to extend financing, particularly for startups, Maraschin said. In Mesa County, the value of real estate businesses use as collaterial has decreased.

Lopez acknowledged it can be difficult for small businesses to access capital, especially if they have no collateral or? history of cash flow. But the SBA can help, he said. ?What we do through SBA is make you bankable.?

Lopez also acknowledged the more stringent regulations put in place in the aftermath of the financial crises in 2008. He said he?d be willing to talk to members of the Colorado congressional delegation to address that concern. He also said he could arrange a telephone call with the head of capital access at the SBA.

Meanwhile, the SBA continues to offer? training and other assistance to entrepreneurs of all kinds, Lopez said. Funded in part by the SBA, a network of 14 Small Business Development Centers throughout Colorado offer free and low-cost counseling and training. That includes the center operated at the Business Incubator Center.

New SBA initiatives focus on helping military veterans and seniors considering entreprenurial ventures, he added.

Maraschin said he expects the Business Incubator Center to join in efforts to assist veterans going into business. ?We?d like to be a partner with that.?
