Latest toy for digital cameras hails from the 19th century

The Petzval lens, mounted on Canon and Nikon cameras.

While digital camera makers compete on the sleekest, most high-tech lenses and image stabilization, analog photo lovers at Lomography have decided to take inspiration from the earliest days of the art instead, recreating a unique and influential lens that first appeared back in 1840 ? right down to its brass case and distinctive background blur.

Cameras in the 1840s weren't quite as capable as the ones we have today. Part of this was that the actual photographic process wasn't quite mature, and formulas for photosensitive plates and prints were constantly competing and being revised.

But the lenses used then were also fairly crude ? couldn't gather much light, required long exposures ? and were not nearly as precise or complex as today's. Joseph Petzval, a 19th century math professor at the University of Vienna, worked out a better lens design that hit F/3.6, making it many times faster than its rivals. The Petzval lens was widely used in the 1800s, but times changed, and it was more or less left in the past ? until now.

Lomography

The Petzval's distorted bokeh, or background blur, is a highly sought-after effect.

Lomography wanted to recreate this historic lens, which these days is coveted for its interesting optical effects. So the staff worked with a Russian optics company to figure out what made the Petzval lens tick. Amazingly, they've managed to remake it, funky aperture system and brass casing included.

In fact, they've actually improved it, at least for today's cameras. The new Petzval not only features a wider aperture (F/2.2), but it will be available on both Canon and Nikon DSLR mounts. Before, you'd have to buy some weird adapter, but not anymore.

But most importantly, the beautiful, swirling background blur is there in all its glory. Sure, you can get a similar effect on certain Russian lenses from a few decades back (for cheaper, too) ? but there's nothing like the original. Or at least a reinvention of the original.

The new Petzval lens hit Kickstarter Thursday morning, and as of this writing just crossed the $400,000 line ? four times its initial goal. You can still pledge and receive a lens for $400, which is $100 less than what it will go for once it enters production.

Sony Pictures Revs up GRAN TURISMO Movie

?gran-turismo-slice

I?ve never quite understood the Gran Turismo games.? Other racing games, I get.? I enjoy the colorful nature of kart games, I can marginally understand the thrill of the Need for Speed when it comes to escaping from the cops, and the Burnout series is a blast for pure, destructive joy.? But from what I gather about Gran Turismo, it?s got great graphics, you can drive real-world cars, and make them go around a track.? Whoopee.

And yet, it?s one of PlayStation?s best-selling series of all-time, so naturally it?s time to figure out how to make it into a movie.? Hit the jump for more.

According to The Wrap, Fifty Shades of Grey producers Mike De Luca and Dana Brunetti are developing an adaptation of the game, which could conceivably compete with Fast & Furious, Need for Speed for starring Aaron Paul, and Legendary trying to get director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo (28 Weeks Later) or Simon Crane in the driver?s seat of Hot Wheels.? But Gran Turismo distinguishes itself not just on the quality of its visuals, but that gamers can use actual cars, and presumably the companies allow this because the games aren?t about highlighting crashes.? They?re about handling and physics, and the only way that translates to a movie is the same way it translates to a car commercial.

And that?s what a Gran Turismo movie could end up being.? It could have the most insane product placement where every car logo is lovingly and longingly given a close-up so audience members can know that they can never own the BMW 135i.

Snowden seeks temporary asylum in Russia: lawyer

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Former U.S. spy agency contractor Edward Snowden, who is wanted in the United States on espionage charges, has requested temporary asylum in Russia, a Russian lawyer said on Tuesday.

Snowden hopes to find refuge in Latin America after leaking details of U.S. government surveillance programs but has been unable to get there since arriving at Moscow's Sheremetyevo airport from Hong Kong on June 23.

"He reached the conclusion that he needs to write an application for temporary asylum (in Russia), and his procedure has just been done," said Anatoly Kucherena, a lawyer who met Snowden on Friday with human rights activists.

Kucherena, who says he has been advising Snowden, did not make clear how the American had filed his application or whether it had already reached the Russian authorities.

Snowden, who is holed up in Sheremetyevo's transit area, said on Friday that he would seek refuge in Russia only until he is able to travel on to Latin America, where three countries have offered him political asylum.

He said he had to do this because the United States and its allies were preventing him reaching Latin America. The United States has revoked Snowden's passport and urged nations worldwide not to help him reach an asylum destination.

Kucherena said he expects a decision on Snowden's asylum request "soon". The process for seeking temporary asylum is different from that for political asylum, which Kucherena said would require a decree from President Vladimir Putin.

Good morning, sports fans: Now that the Nittany Lions are headed to Ireland, it's time to plan your trip

The worst-kept secret about Penn State?s 2014 schedule is finally official.

The Nittany Lions will open the season against Central Florida in Dublin?s Croke Park.

The stadium will seat 69,000 fans for the Aug. 30 game that kicks off at 1:30 p.m. local time. That will be great for fans who like their breakfast with a side of college football.

The Croke Park Classic will be the eighth American college football game played in Ireland, and the Big Ten Conference?s first international game since Michigan State and Wisconsin met in Tokyo in 1993.

It didn?t take long for news of the game to hit Twitter. Former player and current member of the board of trustees Adam Taliaferro ordered a round of ?shamrock shakes for PSU.?

Mike Wierzbicki is looking forward to Penn State coach Bill O?Brien vs. Central Florida coach George O?Leary.

The Penn State Alumni Association is already offering four- and eight-day travel packages that include tickets to the game and sightseeing options. Some packages even include a Penn State party at the Guinness-Storehouse.

These packages range in price from $1,519 to $2,299, but do not include airfare or transportation to or from the airport.

It?s too soon to determine how much the airfare will set fans back because reservations can only be booked 330 days in advance. The closest you can get is June 2014 prices, which would be slightly under $1,000 roundtrip.

AG calls Martin killing an 'unnecessary shooting'

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Attorney General Eric Holder on Monday called the killing of Trayvon Martin a "tragic, unnecessary shooting," and said the Justice Department will follow "the facts and the law" as it reviews evidence to see whether federal criminal charges are warranted.

In his first comments since the acquittal of George Zimmerman in the Martin case, the attorney general said the 17-year-old's death provides an opportunity for the nation to speak honestly about complicated and emotionally charged issues.

He said the nation must not forgo an opportunity toward better understanding of one another.

On Sunday, the Justice Department said it is reviewing evidence in the case to determine whether criminal civil rights charges would be brought.

The department opened an investigation into Martin's death last year but stepped aside to allow the state prosecution to proceed.

Holder said, "We are ... mindful of the pain felt by our nation surrounding the tragic, unnecessary shooting death of Trayvon Martin in Sanford, Fla., last year." The attorney general's characterization of the killing drew strong applause from the audience at the 51st national convention of the Delta Sigma Theta, the nation's largest African-American sorority.

"Independent of the legal determination that will be made, I believe that this tragedy provides yet another opportunity for our nation to speak honestly about the complicated and emotionally charged issues that this case has raised," Holder said.

"We must not ? as we have too often in the past ? let this opportunity pass," he added.

"I hope that we will approach this necessarily difficult dialogue with the same dignity that those who have lost the most, Trayvon's parents, have demonstrated throughout the last year ? and especially over the past few days," said Holder. "They suffered a pain that no parent should have to endure ? and one that I, as a father, cannot begin to conceive."

The Justice Department says the criminal section of the agency's civil rights division, along with the FBI and federal prosecutors in Florida, are all continuing to evaluate the evidence generated during the federal investigation, plus evidence and testimony from the state trial.

The NAACP and others are calling on the Justice Department to file civil rights charges against Zimmerman. Thousands of demonstrators from across the country protested the jury's decision to clear Zimmerman in the shooting death of the unarmed black teenager.

Also on Monday, the White House said President Barack Obama won't involve himself in the Justice Department decision on whether to pursue civil rights charges against Zimmerman. White House spokesman Jay Carney said it would be inappropriate for Obama to express an opinion on how the department deals with Zimmerman.

Barbara Arnwine, president and executive director of the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, called the verdict "a travesty and miscarriage of justice" and urged the Justice Department to bring criminal civil rights charges against Zimmerman.

Apple reportedly hiring new talent to solve iWatch design problems

Apple reportedly hiring new talent to solve iWatch design problems

Rumors, suggestions and trademark applications have been building a case for an wrist-worn Apple product for some time now -- an official iWatch to fulfill the wearable potential of the iPod Nano. Now, the Financial Times says the company is "aggressively" hiring to help it get the product ready for release. According to the usual sources familiar with the matter, the new staff might have been sought out to help Apple wrap its head around wearable computing, moving the project to the next stage of development. The timing of the hires might also imply that the iWatch won't be ready until late next year. Of course, if you can't wait that long, you can always just make your own.

Yahoo accepting requests for inactive email IDs

(AP) ? Yahoo is allowing people to place claims on inactive email addresses that are being given a second life.

The opportunity to request the identifications began Monday and will extend through Aug. 7. Up to five different names can be submitted at http://wishlist.yahoo.com .

Yahoo Inc. says a substantial number of old email IDs are being made available, but isn't providing specifics. All the deactivated accounts haven't been used in at least a year.

The dormant email IDs are being released a month after the Sunnyvale, Calif., company notified users that they would have 30 days to log into an inactive account if they wanted to keep it.

People awarded the rights to the recycled email addresses will have a 48-hour period to activate the accounts beginning Aug. 15.

Yahoo is hoping the inactive IDs will be claimed by people who will use them to log into its website and discover a series of changes to its email, home page and other services that have been made since Marissa Mayer became the company's CEO a year ago.

The resurrection of inactive email addresses, however, could be exploited by computer hackers hoping to use the IDs to pry into sensitive information about the former accountholders. There's a risk because many people use their email accounts as logins at a different password-protected websites, including Facebook, Twitter and Amazon.com. That raises the specter of some people trying to use the recycled email IDs to request the passwords of former accountholders.

Yahoo says it has taken a series of security measures to minimize the chances of any mischief. Among other things, Yahoo says emails are now being bounced back from the inactive email accounts. The company says it has also developed a system that will help other websites identify email addresses that have been transferred to new accountholders after the recycling is completed.

Fires, broken windows after Zimmerman acquitted

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Protesters were expected to take to the streets against Sunday after largely peaceful demonstrations in three California cities following the acquittal of George Zimmerman in the shooting death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin.

Rallies were planned in Los Angeles, Oakland, San Diego and San Francisco, a day after Zimmerman was cleared of all charges in the February 2012 death of Martin.

The gatherings Saturday night ranged from a few dozen to a couple hundred people. In Oakland, protesters broke windows at the Oakland Tribune and started small fires in the streets. Local media reports said some Oakland marchers vandalized a police squad car and police formed a line to block the protesters? path.

Pope spends day in hill town, jokes with residents

CASTEL GANDOLFO, Italy (AP) ? Abandoning the traditional Sunday greeting to crowds in St. Peter's Square for a day, Pope Francis opted for an informal front-door encounter with residents in a hill town outside Rome that hosts the papal summer palace.

Unlike his predecessors, Francis isn't spending the summer at the Vatican residence in Castel Gandolfo, a lakeside town about a 30-minute drive to the Alban Hills southeast of Rome. Instead, he came for the day, escaping the stifling humid weather in the Italian capital for a few hours.

Usually when in Castel Gandolfo on Sundays, pontiffs appear at a window overlooking an inner courtyard or on a balcony facing the town's main square. This time, Francis spoke to people at their level, standing at the main entrance, chatting and bending down to kiss babies in strollers.

The atmosphere was almost neighborly, with one young man in the crowd reaching and patting Francis on the shoulder and another person telling Francis it was his birthday.

Francis said he would like to send a cake to help residents celebrate the feast day Monday of the area's patron saint, but, he joked, drawing laughter, "I don't know if they can make such a huge cake." He was also lunching in the afternoon with fellow Jesuits, who run the Vatican's astronomical observatory in Castel Gandolfo, before the drive back to Rome.

The Argentine-born pontiff mentioned that he would soon go to Brazil to join young people for the Church's World Youth Day jamboree.

"I'll leave in eight days, but many young people will head to Brazil even before," Francis said of his July 22-29 pilgrimage to Rio de Janeiro. He asked for prayers so that participants will be "guided in their steps," and that they would "open their hearts to the mission that Christ will give them."

The gathering, which often draws hundreds of thousands of participants, is held every other year in a different part of the world and serves as a kind of pep rally to energize the youngest members of the Catholic church. The Vatican is concerned that many people in South America, where Catholicism is the predominant religion, are joining evangelical Protestant churches seen as more dynamic and attentive to the needs of people in the developing world.

Francis last came to Castel Gandolfo in March, shortly after being elected pope, to pay a call on his predecessor, Benedict XVI, who, in the weeks following his historic retirement, was staying at the summer residence. Benedict has since moved back to Rome, settling into a monastery on Vatican City's grounds, where he plans to spend his days in prayer and meditation.

Gas prices expected to soar. What gives?

Gas prices will rise dramatically in the near term, analysts predict. Many attribute it to a rise in oil prices, but the gas prices spike has more to do with gasoline fundamentals, writes Styles.

By Geoffrey Styles,?Guest blogger / July 12, 2013

Gasoline drips from a nozzle at gas station in Lake Oswego, Ore. A rise in gas prices has more to do with seasonal factors than unrest in other parts of the goal, Styles writes.

Which Oil Price to Watch?

Some economists and consumers are bracing for a?sharp uptick in gasoline prices, because the?price of crude oil?has shot up by $10 per barrel?in the last month. Except that it hasn?t, at least not if we?re talking about the global price of crude oil that?s factored into the price of the petroleum products sold in much of the US, especially along the coasts.

The global oil market, reflected in the price of?UK Brent crude, is only up about?$5 per barrel?this month, mainly due to the situation in Egypt. A big part of the jump in domestic oil prices reflects the closing of a historically anomalous gap as US oil moves back into line with the rest of the world.

Such an increase in oil prices does not automatically herald a rise in gasoline prices, especially if it mainly erases a discount that benefited refiners in one region of the country. Moreover, gasoline and crude oil as?commodities move in separate markets, linked but not in lock-step.? Over the medium-to-longer term?they?must clearly be?connected, but in the short term each responds to distinct forces of supply, demand, inventories and expectations.?

After Widening for Two Years, A Crucial Gap Closes

Starting in 2011, West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude, the main US oil benchmark, traded at an?increasingly deep discount?to Brent, a North Sea grade that was Europe?s main oil benchmark, and more recently the world?s. For decades, these two?crudes had traded near parity, plus or minus a buck or two a barrel. Several factors changed that. The biggest was the rapid growth of production from unconventional sources in the middle third of North America: shale oil and upgraded oil sands crude.?From West and South?Texas?to?North Dakota?and Alberta, Canada a wave of new oil overwhelmed existing pipeline capacity, some of which was pointed in the opposite direction to carry imported crude into the mid-continent.

The?enormous?tank farms?at Cushing, OK began to fill up.? That?s a crucial part of the story, because?Cushing is the principal settlement point of the WTI futures contract. The more crude?that arrived at?Cushing without being needed farther north or provided an exit to the south, the?higher inventories rose?and the more depressed the WTI price became, relative to Brent. Nothing like that lasts forever in a highly competitive industry. At a $20/bbl discount, companies pursued every possible avenue for getting oil from Cushing to the Gulf, including building new pipelines and reversing existing ones, while using rail and even trucks in the interim. This amazing episode is nearing its end, and traders are?giving up on it?as an opportunity for profit.

Schmidt: Google, Apple Relationship Improving

Schmidt with Moto X

Could it be that two of the biggest tech titans are ready to make amends?

Though Apple and Google might not be best friends just yet, their icy relationship is apparently thawing out, according to Google executive chairman Eric Schmidt. The firms are in "constant business discussions on a long list of issues," Schmidt told reporters at the annual Allen and Co media conference in Sun Valley, Idaho on Thursday, according to Bloomberg.

Schmidt did not go into details about the nature of the meetings, but said he respects Apple. "These are two proud, well-run, different companies," Schmidt said.

While Schmidt talked to reporters, Apple CEO Tim Cook happened to walk by, Bloomberg reported. Google's chief business officer, Nikesh Arora, shouted to the Apple executive, "Tim, everybody here wants to take your picture!" Cook complied, but did not speak to reporters.

"We got Tim to smile ? always a good thing." Schmidt reportedly quipped.

Though Schmidt previously held a spot on Apple's board of directors, the relationship between the two companies fizzled thanks to growing competition in the smartphone market. Apple has attempted to distance itself from Google in recent years, most notably ditching the search giant's Maps app, which was previously pre-installed on iOS devices, in favor of its own less-than-perfect product.

More recently, Cook took a jab at Android during his keynote at the company's June Worldwide Developer Conference. Cook pointed out that Android fragmentation was alive and well, whereas more than 90 percent of iOS users were using the most recent version of Cupertino's mobile OS. To drive home this point, Apple added a pie chart to its developer website that highlights what percentage of people are using the different versions of iOS, the large majority of which are on the most recent iOS 6.

Meanwhile on the mobile front, shutterbugs at the conference managed to capture photos of Schmidt using what appears to be the forthcoming Moto X phone (click the photo above), which users will apparently be able to customize themselves with colors and engraving. The Moto X is expected to be released this fall.

Asiana passengers begged 911 dispatchers for help

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Stunned and bleeding after a Boeing 777 crash-landed at the San Francisco airport, hundreds of passengers staggered across the debris-strewn tarmac, some trying to help the critically injured, others desperately calling 911 and begging for more ambulances as dire minutes ticked away.

"There's not enough medics out here," a caller told a dispatcher in a 911 call released by the California Highway Patrol. "There is a woman out here on the street, on the runway, who is pretty much burned very severely on the head and we don't know what to do."

Two people died and 180 of the 307 people were hurt Saturday when Asiana Airlines Flight 214, coming in too low and too slow, slammed into a seawall at the end of the runway. The impact ripped off the back of the plane, tossed out three flight attendants and their seats and scattered pieces of the jet across the runway as it spun and skidded to a stop.

The battered passengers, some with broken bones, were told over the jet's public-address system to stay in their seats for another 90 seconds while the cockpit consulted with the control tower, a safety procedure to prevent people from evacuating into life-threatening fires or machinery.

"We don't know what the pilots were thinking, but I can tell you that in previous accidents there have been crews that don't evacuate. They wait for other vehicles to come, to be able to get passengers out safely," said National Transportation Safety Board Chairman Deborah Hersman.

And in this accident, it appears one of the two Chinese teens who died may have been run over by a fire truck rushing to the burning jet.

Hersman said Thursday the fuel tanks did not rupture in the crash, and that the fire was caused by oil on hot engines.

The NTSB is now wrapping up their investigation, heading back to Washington D.C. in coming days with "a mountain of information" to analyze and review, from pieces of the airliner to interview transcripts.

Many passengers jumped out the back of the plane or slid down inflated slides through emergency exits. Then, say some, an unnerving wait began.

"We walked and this lady starts to appear, really stumbling and waving her hand and yelling. It took a couple seconds to register," said Elliott Stone, who was returning from a martial arts competition in South Korea. "Then as I saw the condition she was in, I was like, oh my goodness."

The woman collapsed, he said, and he and his family realized there might be more victims nearby, "so we started running, searching for more. I believe we ended up finding four people that were in the back in the rubble, all very bad condition. We stayed with them, comforted them, yelling for ambulances, fire trucks, anyone to come help."

911 tapes recorded frantic callers, pleading for help.

"We've been on the ground, I don't know, 20 minutes, a half hour," said one woman. "There are people laying on the tarmac with critical injuries, head injuries. We're almost losing a woman here. We're trying to keep her alive."

San Francisco Fire Department spokeswoman Mindy Talmadge said Thursday that some passengers who called 911 may not have immediately seen ambulances at the scene because they were dispatched to a nearby staging area as first responders assessed who needed to be taken to the hospital.

"There is a procedure for doing it," Talmadge said. "You don't cause more chaos in an already chaotic situation. You don't do that with 50 ambulances running around all over the place."

Within 18 minutes of receiving word of the crash, five ambulances and more than a dozen other rescue vehicles were at the scene or en route, in addition to airport fire crews and crews from San Mateo County and other agencies already on the scene, Talmadge said.

"Our response was immediate," Talmadge said. "It's not what you may see in the movies. That's not how a real-life response is to a large-scale incident."

Most of the passengers who were hurt had only minor injuries and were quickly treated and released from hospitals. On Thursday, just nine remained hospitalized, three in critical condition.

Among those who walked away without serious injury were the four pilots, including Lee Gang-kuk, who was landing the big jet for his first time at the San Francisco airport, and Lee Jeong-Min, who was training him.

While the two men had years of aviation experience, this mission involved unfamiliar duties, and it was the first time they had flown together.

Hersman clarified Thursday that the pilot trainee told investigators he saw a flash of light at about 500 feet, which would have been 34 seconds before impact and the point at which the airliner began to slow and drop precipitously. She said he told investigators that the light did not prevent him from seeing his instruments, and that it may have been a reflection of the sun. The other pilots made no mention of a light, she said.

Hersman also said there were two calls to abort the landing, the first came about three seconds before impact, the second, from a different pilot, about 1.5 seconds later.

While the pilots were manually flying the jet for the landing, as expected on a clear, sunny day, they told investigators they thought the airliner's speed was being controlled by an autothrottle set for 157 mph.

Inspectors found that the autothrottle had been "armed," or made ready for activation, Hersman said. But investigators are still determining whether it had been engaged. In the last two minutes, there was a lot of use of autopilot and autothrottle, and investigators are going to look into whether pilots made the appropriate commands and if they knew what they were doing, she said.

Even if the autothrottle malfunctioned, Hersman stressed, the pilots were ultimately responsible for control of the airliner.

"There are two pilots in the cockpit for a reason," she said. "They're there to fly, to navigate, to communicate and if they're using automation, a big key is to monitor."

When the pilots realized the plane was in trouble, they both reached for the throttle. Passengers heard a loud roar as the plane revved up in a last-minute attempt to abort the landing.

The flight originated in Shanghai and stopped over in Seoul before making the nearly 11-hour trip to San Francisco.

On Wednesday, other survivors and their family members visited the crash site, where some shed tears and others stood in disbelief. They were kept about 50 yards away from the wreckage, which was surrounded by metal railing.

"What I think I really came for was to meet other fellow passengers and share a bit of our stories," passenger Ben Levy said. "How we felt and how we got out of that plane."

California congresswomen Nancy Pelosi and Jackie Speier planned to tour the crash site Thursday evening.

UF professor named new dean of College of Pharmacy

Published: Thursday, July 11, 2013 at 5:39 p.m.
Last Modified: Thursday, July 11, 2013 at 5:39 p.m.

University of Florida pharmacy professor Julie Johnson has been named dean of UF's College of Pharmacy, according to a UF media release Thursday.

Johnson, who begins her new position on Aug. 5, is the first woman to lead the school and has been on the UF faculty since 1998 - nine years of that as chair of the department of pharmacotherapy and translational research.

?I'm really excited,? Johnson said. ?We're one of the top-ranked colleges in the university ... and there are a lot of opportunities to make it even better.?

In particular, Johnson said the college will be building on its strengths, including pharmacogenomics, drug discovery, pharmaceutical outcomes and pharmacometrics, the latter of which is based on a mathematical approach to assessing how a drug moves through the body.

?We've got some good things going on in all these areas,? Johnson said, adding that it's now important to ?build critical masses of people? working on these issues, especially mid-career professionals who can ramp up research efforts.

Johnson also said the college ?will be looking to strengthen our relationship with Shands and other educational programs (within UF).?

Johnson also directs the UF Center for Pharmacogenomics and the UF Health Personalized Medicine Program, which recently was awarded a $3.7 million grant from the National Institutes of Health. In her 15 years at UF, Johnson has received $35 million in NIH funding.

Prior to UF, Johnson was a faculty member at the University of Tennessee College of Pharmacy for nine years. She received her Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of Texas at Austin.

According to the media release, Dr. David S. Guzick, senior vice president for health affairs and president of UF Health, said of Johnson: ?Her extraordinary record of research that translates into improved patient care, her demonstrated ability to mentor faculty into successful research careers, her history of excellence in teaching and outreach at the University of Florida, and her ambitious vision for the College of Pharmacy's future, made her the ideal candidate for dean.?

The previous dean, William Riffee, stepped down last month after 17 years in the position.

IM's 'twitter handle' still active, 'unfollows' LeT's Hafiz Saeed

NEW DELHI: A twitter handle, purportedly belonging to a terror outfit Indian Mujahideen, has created flutter in the country's security establishments. It's claim on Bodh Gaya blasts may not be genuine, but the fact that the account generated its first tweet barely 16 hours before the incident forced the agencies on Wednesday to take it up with the US-based company Twitter Inc. to find out the location where it could be used to upload the message.

Interestingly, the twitter handle - @IndianMujahidin - which went silent after July 7 was used again on Wednesday. It was, however, this time not used to tweet something. The handler of the account did just 'unfollow' the Pakistan-based terror outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) founder Hafiz Muhammad Saeed and went on silent mode again.

The fiddling with the account shows that someone must be still operating it from the location which is still unknown to the agencies.

Officials said even if it appears to be a prank, they cannot take it lightly until they verify it and reach to a logical conclusion.

"The matter is still being verified. We have done some ground-works and also taken up the issue with the Twitter Inc", said an official.

Since the person who might have opened the account used a proxy server pointing its location somewhere in Canada, the Indian agencies are verifying the details with the micro-blogging giant.

"We are trying to gather details relating to identity and IP address used to register the account. Though it could be a fake handle created by an impostor, we cannot rule out any genuine link to IM, more so as a tweet ahead of the blasts warns of an impending strike at Mumbai," a senior home ministry official told TOI.

The Twitter account appears to be created only recently. It has just two tweets so far. It claims to be the official Twitter account of Indian Mujahidin with the message "hamara maksad India se badla lena hai (our aim is to take revenge against India). Rock Sago To Rock Lo (stop if you can stop it) 7 days left".

Though "Rock Sako (not Sago) to Rok Lo" was used by the IM in its one of the six emails sent to media after series of blasts in different cities across the country during 2007-10, it could not mean much as everything (contents) relating to the outfit's emails had been extensively reported in the past.

It also claims support from D Company, a nomenclature commonly used for underworld empire of 1993 Mumbai blasts accused Dawood Ibrahim, and its motive is to take revenge with India. The first tweet from the Twitter handle dates back to 14:02 hours on July 6, and warns: "Hamara agla target Mumbai hai. Rock sago to rock lo (Our next target is Mumbai. Stop us if you can)".

On July 7, at 18:32 hours, there was another tweet saying "9 dhamake humne karay" (We carried out the nine blasts).

Officials here said there were reasons to doubt the authenticity of this purported IM twitter handle as "there are spelling mistakes". For example, the introduction spells terrorist as "terriorist". Even the 'Indian Mujahideen' is spelt different as 'Indian Mujahidin' (unlike what IM emails used). Second, past e-mails from IM have consistently stressed on its Indian roots, but this particular account follows Twitter accounts of LeT founder Hafiz Muhammed Saeed and Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan and four others including cricketer Mahendra Singh Dhoni. It 'unfollowed' Hafiz Saeed only on Wednesday evening keeping its 'following' list to five - a move which puzzled the agencies which have been keeping tab on the account.

Officials, however, warned against reading much into the tweet on Mumbai, as no terror group is known to give a seven-day notice to the agencies and public ahead of a strike.

A home ministry official also pointed out that, if the tweet is found to be genuine, this would be the first instance of IM using a public platform to claim responsibility. "Till now, IM has used only emails to claim responsibility for the blasts. These were sent to select media houses," the official noted.

Dinosaurs, diets and ecological niches: Study shows recipe for success

[unable to retrieve full-text content]A new scientific study answers a long-standing question in palaeontology -- how numerous species of large, plant-eating dinosaurs could co-exist successfully over geological time. Results from the largest study of dinosaurs recovered from Alberta's Dinosaur Park Formation suggest that niche partitioning was at play: adaptations in skulls and jaws allowed for distinct groups of herbivores to specialize in eating specific types of vegetation, thereby avoiding competition for valuable food sources.

Mumbai, Maharashtra-- To commemorate World Multiple Sclerosis Day, Biogen Idec India, the global leader in research and treatment of multiple sclerosis, observed World Multiple Sclerosis Day in India through interactive and educative road shows across India.

As part of the initiative, employees rallied across 11 different cities viz Gurgaon, Fardiabad, Delhi, Ahmedabad, Kolkata, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, Cochin and Pune to educate people about Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and express solidarity with people suffering from MS.

The day of service was designed to increase the role of employee volunteerism with focus on patients, healthcare providers and local communities.

Wearing a MS tee and a wig, Biogen Idec employees interacted with the local community and distributed information pamphlets at parks, local market and busy streets.

With the theme message of "Together let's fight MS," healthcare providers were also made aware about the significance of the day and importance of early diagnosis.

The aim of the initiative was to raise awareness of MS, solicit public support for improving opportunities & outcomes for MS patients and create an environment where people can understand MS better.

MS is an auto-immune disease in which the body attacks its own cells and tissues. Due to damage in the nerve layer i.e. myelin sheath, transmission of signals from the brain and spinal cord gets affected. The most common symptoms are weakness in the limbs, numbness, sudden loss of balance, blurred vision that may lead to paralysis. The disease mostly strikes youth at a time when are starting new careers, relationships or making plans for the future. Multiple sclerosis can be difficult to diagnose early in the course of the disease because symptoms often come and go - sometimes disappearing for months

According to estimates, there are between 100,000 - 200,000 multiple sclerosis patients in India, even though that there are no exact statistics on MS. Women are twice more likely to fall prey to MS than men. Genetic and environmental factors are thought to contribute to MS, but a specific cause for the disease hasn't been yet identified nor a permanent cure although certain disease modifying medications such as interferons and monoclonal antibodies can help reduce recurrent attacks and prevent disability in the long run.

Study: Air pollution cut northern China lifespans

BEIJING (AP) ? A new study links heavy air pollution from coal burning to shorter lives in northern China. Researchers estimate that the half-billion people alive there in the 1990s will live an average of 5? years less than their southern counterparts because they breathed dirtier air.

China itself made the comparison possible: for decades, a now-discontinued government policy provided free coal for heating, but only in the colder north. Researchers found significant differences in both particle pollution of the air and life expectancy in the two regions, and said the results could be used to extrapolate the effects of such pollution on lifespans elsewhere in the world.

The study by researchers from China, Israel and the United States was published Tuesday in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

While previous studies have found that pollution affects human health, "the deeper and ultimately more important question is the impact on life expectancy," said one of the authors, Michael Greenstone, a professor of environmental economics at Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

"This study provides a unique setting to answer the life expectancy question because the (heating) policy dramatically alters pollution concentrations for people who appear to be of otherwise identical health," Greenstone said in an email. "Further, due to the low rates of migration in China in this period, we can know people's exposure over long time periods," he said.

The policy gave free coal for fuel boilers to heat homes and offices to cities north of the Huai River, which divides China into north and south. It was in effect for much of the 1950-1980 period of central planning, and, though discontinued after 1980, it has left a legacy in the north of heavy coal burning, which releases particulate pollutants into the air that can harm human health. Researchers found no other government policies that treated China's north differently from the south.

The researchers collected data for 90 cities, from 1981 to 2000, on the annual daily average concentration of total suspended particulates. In China, those are considered to be particles that are 100 micrometers or less in diameter, emitted from sources including power stations, construction sites and vehicles.

The researchers estimated the impact on life expectancies using mortality data from 1991-2000. They found that in the north, the concentration of particulates was 184 micrograms per cubic meter ? or 55 percent ? higher than in the south, and life expectancies were 5.5 years lower on average across all age ranges.

The researchers said the difference in life expectancies was almost entirely due to an increased incidence of deaths classified as cardiorespiratory ? those from causes that have previously been linked to air quality, including heart disease, stroke, lung cancer and respiratory illnesses.

Total suspended particulates include fine particulate matter called PM2.5 ? particles with diameters of no more than 2.5 micrometers. PM2.5 is of especially great health concern because it can penetrate deep into the lungs, but the researchers lacked the data to analyze those tiny particles separately.

The authors said their research can be used to estimate the effect of total suspended particulates on other countries and time periods. Their analysis suggests that every additional 100 micrograms of particulate matter per cubic meter in the atmosphere lowers life expectancy at birth by about three years.

The study also noted that there was a large difference in particulate matter between the north and south, but not in other forms of air pollution such as sulfur dioxide and nitrous oxide.

Francesca Dominici, a professor of biostatistics at Harvard School of Public Health who has researched the health effects of fine particulate matter in the U.S., said the study was "fascinating."

China's different treatment of north and south allowed researchers to get pollution data that would be impossible in a scientific setting.

Dominici said the quasi-experimental approach was a good approximation of a randomized experiment, "especially in this situation where a randomized experiment is not possible."

She said she wasn't surprised by the findings, given China's high levels of pollution.

"In the U.S. I think it's pretty much been accepted that even small changes in PM2.5, much, much, much smaller than what they are observing in China, are affecting life expectancy," said Dominici, who was not involved in the study.
