Volcano activity in Mexico cancels some South Florida flights

Dozens of U.S. flights were cancelled because of volcanic activity emitting from?Popocat?petl.

Tremors from Mexico's Popocatepetl volcano forced several airlines to cancel flights to the country's capital on Thursday, CNN reports.

The volcano let out bursts of steam, gas and ash in the past 24 hours, according to the National Center of Disaster Prevention.

Although the ashes didn't reach Mexico City International Airport, airlines including American Airlines, US Airways, and Delta Airlines cancelled a dozen of flights that were scheduled to depart from the airport on Thursday, according to CNN.

American Airlines said it cancelled two flights Thursday from Miami to Mexico and one flight from Mexico to Miami. All operations returned to normal on Friday.

Spirit Airlines cancelled flights at the nearby Toluca International Airport to and from Fort Lauderdale and Dallas.

Popocatepetl is one of Mexico's most active volcanoes and has the second-highest peak in Mexico at 17,802 feet. The volcano's most recent eruption took place in May after the volcano hurled ash and fragments of fiery volcanic rocks from the crater.
