Trinity Holds Home Court With 7-2 Victory Over Tiger Men's Squash ...

The Princeton men's squash team left Hartford Wednesday night knowing two things. First, the Tigers are good enough to stand toe-to-toe with the 13-time defending champion. Second, streak or no streak, Trinity will remain a force to be reckoned with during the team championships.

Trinity, which saw its 252-match win streak come to an end last week against Yale, improved its win streak over Princeton to 23 straight with a 7-2 home win over Princeton Wednesday night. While the final score was a decisive one, a glance at the individual scores shows just how close this match was.

Three Princeton players held 2-1 leads and then were right there at the end of the fifth game before falling. Those three have combined for five All-America honors and are among Princeton's toughest players at home, where the Tigers can clinch both an Ivy League and national team championship over the next three weeks.

Reigning national individual champion Todd Harrity saw a 2-1 lead to senior Vikram Malhotra evaporate in a 3-2 loss. Malhotra, who had never beaten Harrity in collegiate play, scored an 11-9 win in the fifth to help close out the dramatic win for the Bantams, who have won six in a row since the 5-4 loss to top-ranked Yale last week.

Senior co-captain Chris Callis, who had been undefeated at No. 2 this season, also led 2-1, but senior Antonio Diaz Glez came back with wins of 11-7 and 11-8 to take the match. Fellow co-captain Kelly Shannon, who is returning from an injury that kept him out several matches, had an even tougher final two games. He dropped 11-9 and 13-9 decisions in a 3-2 loss.

Princeton got victories from senior Clay Blackiston and sophomore Dylan Ward. Blackiston came out in the first shift and scored a hard-fought 3-1 win over Vishrab Kotian. Blackiston, who had several tough wins last season, won each of his three games by two points and made sure Princeton was down only 2-1 through the first shift.

It was the second shift when Trinity took over. The Bantams got 3-0 wins at the No. 5 and No. 8 positions; Johan Detter's 3-0 win at No. 5 marked the first collegiate loss for Princeton freshman Samuel Kang. Callis needed only to win his match to keep Princeton alive, especially as Ward ? the hero of the 5-4 win over Harvard ? scored a 3-0 win at No. 7. But Diaz Glez simply had the late answers against Callis, who will be looking to avenge that win should the two meet again in Jadwin Gym during the national team championships.

Of course, nationals are still weeks away. Princeton's most immediate concern revolves around the Ivy League title and its Saturday home showdown with top-ranked Yale. The Bulldogs have won each of the last two Ivy League titles with tight wins over Princeton, and both are unbeaten in league play heading into their noon matchup Saturday at Jadwin.
