Obama widens lead over Romney to seven points: Reuters/Ipsos poll
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama widened his lead over Republican challenger Mitt Romney to 7 percentage points in a Reuters/Ipsos poll of likely voters on Thursday, the latest survey to show the Democrat ahead in the run-up to the November 6 election.
The daily online poll asked 990 likely voters over the previous four days which candidate they would pick if the vote took place today, with 48 percent choosing Obama and 41 percent picking Romney.
The gap has been widening since Obama grabbed the lead in the rolling poll on September 7 when he scooped up 46 percent of likely voters to Romney's 44 percent after the Democratic convention.
"What that really means is that Obama is in good shape," said Ipsos pollster Julia Clark, attributing some of Obama's uptick to the slowly improving sentiment toward the direction of the country shown in Wednesday's telephone poll.
Among all 1,231 registered voters surveyed online, Obama led with 45 percent to Romney's 39 percent.
Thursday's online poll also found far more registered voters preferred the incumbent's policies and approach on taxes (41 percent picked Obama, 30 percent Romney), healthcare (44 percent Obama, 28 percent Romney) and Social Security (39 percent Obama, 27 percent Romney).
Asked which of the candidates had a better plan, policy or approach to the war on terrorism, more registered voters again favored Obama: 39 percent to Romney's 25 percent.
Foreign policy moved to the center of the campaign this week after four Americans, including an ambassador, were killed in Libya as protests raged in Benghazi and Cairo in neighboring Egypt against an anti-Islam film made in the United States.
The two candidates ranked closely on the U.S. economy: 36 percent said Obama's approach was better, versus 35 percent for Romney. Obama held a slight lead of 38 percent to Romney's 35 percent on jobs and unemployment, despite poor unemployment figures last Friday.
But 35 percent of registered voters found Romney's policies and plans on the federal deficit were better than Obama's. Thursday's poll showed Obama with 31 percent.
Independents - a key voting bloc - favored neither of the candidate's policies on many issues.
"Neither candidate has established credibility on these issues," Clark said. "Neither candidate is really doing it for these independents."
Asked for whom they would vote for in Thursday's poll, the small pool of independents preferred Romney with 35 percent to Obama's 26 percent, which Clark attributed to their high focus on economic issues.
The precision of Reuters/Ipsos rolling daily online polls is measured using a credibility interval. In this case, the poll has a credibility interval of plus or minus 3.2 percentage points for all respondents.

Cops: Woman pulls gun during car sex, causing crash

A Florida woman who allegedly pulled a gun on a man during sex and demanded money, causing him to lose control of his moving car, was arrested Tuesday, police said.
The woman, Amanda Jean Linscott, 26, fled the scene on foot after the vehicle struck a palm tree, went airborne and plowed through two front yards, according to the Charlotte County Sheriff's Office in Port Charlotte, Fla.
After a weeklong investigation, Linscott was arrested Tuesday on an armed robbery charge.
The incident, which happened during the early morning hours of September 3, was the result of a chain of events that started at the Paddy Wagon Irish Pub in Port Charlotte, according to a police report.

Linscott, accompanied by a friend, met with the unnamed victim and two of his friends at the bar. After it closed, the men invited the women to come to a private residence, where the man and another woman went into a bedroom to have sex, police said.
?The girl said she needed $250, which [the victim] said he didn?t have. She asked how much he had and he gave her $120,? the police report said.
Then, the man went to the bathroom and both women left the house.
Police said the man called the woman to whom he gave the money and arranged to meet her at a local convenience store. When he arrived at the location, he instead found Linscott, who said her friend had left her.
Linscott then got into the man?s car and began having sex with him while he was driving his Nissan Sentra. ?
Linscott allegedly demanded money from the man, who told her he had already given $120 to her friend. At that point, she pulled out a .357 revolver and held it to the man?s head, police said.

The man grabbed the weapon and punched Linscott in the face, he told police, causing him to lose control of his car. The vehicle struck a palm tree and went through two yards before coming to a stop.
At that point, Linscott fled the scene.
The man drove his car to his friends' house, where he gave them the gun and called police.
When police responded to the scene, they found an elderly man in a driveway who told them his daughter, Amanda Linscott, was in a car accident and had been punched in the face, police said.?
Police questioned all parties involved and later arrested Linscott. She is currently being held at the Charlotte County Jail without bond.?

Egypt likely needs over $10 billion in aid: senior EU official
BRUSSELS (Reuters) - Egypt is likely to need more than $10 billion in external financing to help it get its economy on track, a senior EU official said on Wednesday.
The official said the European Union and other institutions and countries were considering financial support for Egypt in addition to a $4.8 billion loan which Cairo has requested from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
"...Egypt will need more than this almost $5 billion, probably Egypt will need more than double this amount, more than $10 billion," the official told a briefing ahead of a visit to Brussels by Egyptian President Mohamed Mursi on Thursday.
The EU will "reinforce" the IMF package with aid of its own for Egypt, but was still considering how much support it would provide, the official said.
Egypt, which needs help to stave off a balance of payments crisis and rebuild confidence among investors who fled during 18 months of political turmoil, hopes to reach a deal with the IMF by the end of the year, officials in Cairo have said.
Mursi, on his first visit to Europe since he became Egypt's first freely elected president in June, will meet European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso, foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton and Herman van Rompuy, president of the council of EU governments.
The meetings will take place two days after Tuesday's attacks on the U.S. embassy in Cairo, where protesters scaled the walls, tore down the U.S. flag and burned it. Demonstrators said they were protesting about what they said was a U.S. film insulting the Prophet Mohammad.
Later on Tuesday, protesters in Libya attacked the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, killing the U.S. ambassador and three other embassy staff.
The talks in Brussels are expected to cover economic support, job creation, agriculture, energy and European investment in Egypt, the official said. The Egyptians are focusing on developing the country's gas industry and renewable energy.
Trade will be on the agenda but the European Union is not yet ready to open talks with Egypt on a free trade agreement, the official said.
Egypt's future is important for the 27-member bloc, which sees the development of Arab Spring countries as an economic opportunity, but also fears the possibility of anti-European governments on the other side of the Mediterranean.
Last year, the European Union introduced a "more for more" policy under which it links economic aid to progress in civil rights and democracy.
