NBA free agency: Paul, Rivers in tow, big roster decisions ahead of Clippers

It was a torturous path, but the Clippers seem to have gotten themselves right where they hoped to be as NBA free agency gets underway. They have the guy who some consider to be the best coach in the NBA?Doc Rivers?and gave up only a draft pick to get him. And they?re poised to remove any shred of anxiety about the future of point guard Chris Paul, who has let it be known he intends to re-sign with LA.

That?s the good news. The bad news is that the rest of the roster is very much in flux, and Rivers?carrying his new front-office title?now must figure out how to fill in the right mix of players around Paul.

MORE: Paul to stay with Clippers | Celtics trade Garnett, Pierce | Howard to meet with teams

The two big decisions that Rivers has to make, of course, is what to do with center DeAndre Jordan, who was nearly sent to Boston for Kevin Garnett, and backup point guard Eric Bledsoe. The Clippers fielded a number of offers for Bledsoe at the draft, but league sources said the Clippers did not want to trade him until they see how the rest of the roster shapes up.

Jordan has drawn plenty of interest, most notably from Portland, where the general manager who drafted Jordan for the Clippers?Neil Olshey?is now running the show. But Rivers knows he has got to be careful when it comes to Jordan. He is only 25, and having his name being put through the trade wringer is not going to be helpful for his already delicate psyche. The ship sailed on getting Garnett to LA, obviously, and keeping Jordan might, in the end, be the solution at center.

If that?s the case, Rivers is going to need Jordan to buy in 100 percent. Sources around the Clippers last year told Sporting News that Jordan, despite his deficiencies, actually put in the most work of his career last season, attempting to develop a hook shot as he learned to play with his back to the basket. But Jordan lacks confidence in his interior game because of his 38.6 percent free-throw shooting.

?If the right (assistant) coaches get him and build him up, he is going to have a breakthrough,? one source said. ?But starting it all off with trade rumors is not going to help him between the ears.?

Still, with Jordan?s free-throw shooting weighing on the team, the Clippers will need a good backup big man. They?re likely to keep free-agent Ryan Hollins, who played with Rivers in Boston, but will look for an upgrade behind Jordan. The Clippers are rumored to have interest in Marreese Speights, but he is likely out of their price range. More likely is that they will pursue a veteran, and former Clippers Elton Brand and Chris Wilcox would be up on that list.

ESPN.com reported that the Clippers have been offered Toronto big man Andrea Bargnani for Caron Butler. There have been ongoing talks between the teams about swapping Bledsoe for DeMar DeRozan, but the Clippers are reluctant to take on DeRozan?s newly signed four-year, $40 million contract.

The big issue is what to do about the two starting wing spots. In addition to DeRozan, the Clippers have had talks?before Rivers arrived?with the Magic about swapping Bledsoe for guard Arron Afflalo, who is a top-notch defender and averaged 16.5 points. Orlando selected shooting guard Victor Oladipo with the No. 2 pick in the draft, meaning Afflalo is likely on his way out.

The Clippers? focus on the shooting guard spot, and their willingness to dump Butler, leaves small forward wide open. Matt Barnes is a free agent and played well?on a minimum contract?for the Clippers last year. Ideally, the team would re-sign him and put him in the starting five, but Barnes will have more options this summer and could price himself out of the Clippers? range.

If Barnes leaves, there will be a rather gaping hole in the roster for the Clippers. There had been the hope that the Celtics would buy out Paul Pierce, and that he would head West to join Rivers, but that, too, has now been scotched.

The Clippers have tradable assets with Bledsoe and Jordan. However, they also have multiple holes to fill. Paul and Rivers are in place, but the work is just beginning.

Wendy Davis Accusses Texas Gov. Rick Perry Of Endangering Women For Political Gain

By Alan with comments June 30, 2013 17:37

The Texas state senator believes Perry and his allies care more about their political future than the well-being of women.

?Gov. (Rick) Perry and Lt. Gov. (David) Dewhurst are willing to ? put women in harm?s way in order to step up on the political ladder,? she said on CBS? ?Face the Nation? on Sunday morning.

Perry and Dewhurst are pushing for a sweeping anti-abortion bill that would effectively close all but five of the state?s 42 current abortion clinics.

?If this happens in Texas, women in impoverished, remote areas of Texas ? will no longer have access to this safe reproductive health care,? Davis said.

And Davis said Perry?s comments about her personal life are demeaning to the office he holds.

China Foreign Debt Approaches $1 Trillion

China debt on the rise and likely to hit $1 trillion or more by year's end.

The amount of debt China owes foreign lenders ? to those who are inclined to believe what the government says ? is approaching the $1 trillion market. ?It will be there, if it is not already, before the end of the year.

As of March, it hit $764 billion, up from $736 billion in February, the State Administration of Foreign Exchange said on its website on Friday.

Outstanding short-term foreign debt, due within one year, rose to $565.68 billion from $540.93 billion at the end of last year.

The country has over $3 trillion in cash reserves. More than enough to service its borrowing or wipe it out entirely and still have a few trillion left over for a rainy day.

China is not a large overseas borrower, but is seen increasing its use of foreign capital markets in the years ahead as the economy matures. ?By comparison, the U.S. total debt obligations are over $17 trillion. It is unclear exactly what are China?s overall debt obligations.

Investors have bee mildly concerned over China?s debt levels, from federal to municipal to corporate debt. ?This year, for the first time ever, a Chinese solar company defaulted on a $531 million debt. ?Suntech Power is now in bankruptcy protection.

Over the last week, China investors got another scare with the People?s Bank of China, their central bank, said it would not be helping out small to mid-sized lenders who took on too much credit risk. ?The market panicked. Stocks fell. And then the Bank said that it would indeed help with liquidity where needed, and has even offered banks some cash protection over the last forty eight hours, according to published reports quoting Central Banker?Zhou Xiaochuan.

On Saturday, the Chinese Banking Regulatory Commission smoothed over the liquidity crunch concerns when it added its voice to the chorus and said that there was adequate reserves set aside at banks to cover problems with non-performing loans.

Commission chairman Shang Fulin said the recent liquidity crisis ? which sent money market rates soaring to 11% in a country used to rates around 3% ? would not affect the stable operation of Chinese banks. He acknowledged that some banks needed to improve their liquidity and risk management and promised to strengthen regulation for wealth management products and commercial banks. He urged banks to improve transparency of the wealth management products being offered, which suggests an ongoing concern in the capital city with municipal level shadow banking and investment that invests pension fund money into government pet projects and assets that have zero return.

All is clearly not well in China banking. ?But many close China watchers at banks like Barclays Capital believe the country can weather this. ?They have faith in China regulators and Beijing leaders to keep financial problems under control.

Huang Yiping, chief economist for Barclays in China, described the economic policy framework of Premier Li Keqiang as ?no stimulus, de-leveraging?and structural reform?. These are key components of what Huang calls ?Li-Economics?.

?We think Li-Economics?is exactly what China needs to put its economy on a sustainable path, which we estimate is around 6 to 8 percent annual growth for the next 10 years,? Huang said during the Global Think Tank Summit in Beijing this week.

China has resisted calls for more stimulus. ?The markets have been betting on it and never got it. ?It?s been one of the reason why Chinese equities have been such a bore all year.

The iShares FTSE China (FXI) exchange traded fund is down 19.6% year to date, the second worse performing BRIC market after Brazil. The iShares MSCI Brazil (EWZ) is the worst, down 21.58% YTD. ?All of the BRICs are underperforming the MSCI Emerging Markets Index so far this year.

Guide To Writing New Adult Bestseller | Scribbles and Tunes

New genres in writing appear on the horizon every once in a while, shining and blazing like a car on that same horizon does if made completely out of magnesium and set afire by a carelessly dropped cigar, a lit oxyacetylene torch, or several tons of spontaneously combusting fireflies. They light up the sky. They warm us. They provide an excellent venue for roasting marshmallows (if one is fond of smores).

One of the latest genres to storm the bastille of the Amazon is New Adult. Don?t let the title confuse you if you are fond of the Old Adult genre. Or even the Middle-Aged Adult genre. Or the Recycled Adult genre (a favorite among the thrift-store aficionados of Portland, Oregon, as well as those deriving income from the waste-hauling segment of our economy [ie., the mafia]).

New Adult, according to those who know, is defined by several parameters. First, the main character is generally between the age of 18 and 26, which means they?ve acquired the ability to vote, move out of the house, become self-sufficient, and continue to be insured under their parents health insurance plan. Also, New Adult typically deals with such heart-warming themes as sexuality, race, alcohol abuse, sex, drug abuse, more sex, bullying, sex, empowerment (of bullies?), familial struggles, taut abdominal muscles, sex, loss of innocence, fear of failure, Alec Baldwin, and? wait for it, wait for it?sex.

Doubtlessly, you, the budding, panting writer, desperate to break into the top 100 hundred on Amazon, are befuddled and bemused by the complexity of this new genre. Your heart quails within you, sort of like a quail (the bird, not the verb) as it scuttles across the ground in search of delicious bugs, or in frantic flight from the fox of failure.

Fear not. I shall carefully outline how you can write a best-selling New Adult blockbuster. All it takes is five easy steps and you?re home free to massive royalties and lolling about in the Ibizan sun, slathered in sunscreen (please note that excessive tanning without proper sunscreen [ie., living in a dark cave one mile down] can cause skin cancer).

FIVE STEPS TO NEW ADULT AWESOMENESS

1.?The Female Between the Age of 18 and 26

All New Adult bestsellers must have an amazingly beautiful female protagonist. She must coyly think she is not that good-looking, even though, in reality, a blind octogenarian mole on the planet Neptune would be able to recognize her stunning beauty from several hundred thousand miles away. Most importantly, though, is that she must have an awesome name like Callie or Sydney or Bailey or Lacey or Lexi.

2. The Male Between the Age of 18 and 26

New Adult Bestsellers must also have an incredibly handsome male protagonist. Now, this next point about the protagonist is a bit difficult for some writers to understand, but I?ll type slowly in order to facilitate comprehension: he must be between the ages of 18 and 26! A lot of new New Adult writers have difficulty with this aspect, but, take it from me: it?s true. In my writing workshops, I notice a lot of writers will make their male protagonist 74 years old or 62 or even 81. I know it?s hard to believe, but these ages won?t work. Trust me. Also, he must possess a smoldering glance, a casually elegant way of wearing clothing (faded, ripped jeans, suitably unbuttoned shirts, alligator boots, etc), and a crooked smile that reveals excellent dental hygiene and evidence of straight teeth (either from braces or good genes). You get extra literary points if he owns a motorcycle that he drives with reckless abandon. Again, most importantly, he must have an incredibly cool name such as Callum or Drake or Brennan or Devon or even Reid. His name must be so cool that readers will be astounded and think, ?Why didn?t my lame parents name me that? My life would?ve been so awesome if my name was Drake. People would say to me, while walking down the street, hey Drake! And I would say, hey.?

3. Her Taut Abs

It is imperative that she have perfectly sculpted taut abs! I cannot stress this point enough. It breaks my heart, but I see many young New Adult writers, venturing timidly into the field for the first time, who neglect to work into their plots her taut abs. Their immaturity as writers blinded them to this important component of plot structure. New Adult plot development simply does not work without her taut abs. When I speak at writing workshops, I frequently give a lecture titled Taut Abs and You: Why Abdominal Muscles are Key to a Professional Writing Career. These lectures, always packed, have proven the salvation of many a writing career. My main point in this lecture is abdominal muscles and Jillian Michaels: you must model her abdominals on Jillian Michaels? abdominals or your writing career is over.

4. His Taut Abs

Equally important are the taut abs of your male protagonist. They must be sculpted with more care than Michelangelo?s work on David. In fact, you must mentally sneer at the inferior abdominals of M?s David. You must scoff and then determine to do him better with your Drake or Drew or whatever amazingly cool name he has.

5. Hot Sex Sans Complications

I can?t tell you how many times immature New Adult writers have called me up (I?m available to do phone consultation at $200 per half hour, payable in advance), weeping hysterically on the phone, unable to spit out even a single, intelligible word. When I calm them down (usually after half an hour, billable), they confess that they wrote sex scenes that ended up with unwanted pregnancies, various STDs, etc. This sort of thing is what you cannot have, despite the fact that sexually transmitted diseases float around in the cesspool of our culture like water lilies on the surface of the Florida Everglades (except that water lilies aren?t all that harmful, though, there are alligators lurking underneath, which might work well for our metaphor). Sex in the New Adult genre must be without complications of any kind. Take a page from the rabbits of the fields (minus their propensity to breed like, well, like rabbits, as well as their odd habit of occasionally eating their young). Do NOT give your protagonists the HPV virus!

And there you have it. With those five hot tips, you are ready to write your New Adult blockbuster without fear of failure. Get ready to pay the IRS huge quarterlies, because you are about to become rich. There is no need to thank me, though, because I would happily supply this information, free of charge, to anyone.

Be inclusive, Morsi, or you may face a second Egyptian revolution

Will it take a second revolution to complete Egypt?s democratic transition? Anti-government protesters plan to turn out in massive numbers Sunday. President Mohamed Morsi should heed cries for more inclusiveness. Otherwise, he may find himself toppled like Mubarak.

By David A. Super,?Op-ed contributor / June 28, 2013

Egyptian protesters chant slogans against President Mohammed Morsi in Damietta, Egypt, in late June. Thousands of backers of Egypt's Islamist president rallied Friday in Cairo in a show of support ahead of planned opposition protests this weekend demanding his removal. Op-ed contributor David A. Super writes, 'Morsi would be wise to heed the demands of the opposition for a roadmap to national reconciliation.'

Will it take a second revolution to complete Egypt?s democratic transition, begun more than two years ago? Many Egyptians think so, and they are planning massive demonstrations on Sunday in an attempt to oust President Mohamed Morsi from office.

Mr. Morsi, an Islamist with roots in the Muslim Brotherhood, was elected last year. Sunday is the anniversary of his inauguration, and his supporters plan counter-demonstrations. Morsi maintains that the ballot box is the way to change leaders, and he?s right ? when elections take place in a democracy.

But Egypt is now under the tight control of a political duopoly of the military and Morsi and his Islamist allies. It has no lawful parliament. Its constitution was created without the input of secular democrats. Opposition activists are under arrest.

Many protesters who started Cairo?s Tahrir Square demonstrations for freedom and rights in 2011 now say their revolution has been hijacked, and they?re right, too.

The increasingly anti-democratic regime reached its nadir this month when it convicted three dozen Egyptian and Western employees of pro-democracy non-profits ? most of the Westerners in abstentia ? for conducting voter education efforts. Sentences ranged from one to five years.

A month earlier, it arrested Ahmed Maher, who co-founded the April 6 youth protest movement, though he was later released pending trial. His communications savvy and raw courage helped pro-democracy demonstrators take and hold Tahrir Square, and ultimately oust dictator Hosni Mubarak.

But after the fall of Mr. Mubarak, who was an Air Force general, the military retained power through a junta of other generals. The generals retained Mubarak?s dreaded security police and their well-documented reliance on torture. The junta arrested bloggers and other activists for non-violent dissent, such as ?insulting? the regime, and gave them long prison sentences in sham military courts.

Curiously, however, the military focused its repression almost entirely on secular democrats: It released Islamists from prison and allowed them to operate freely. The Muslim Brotherhood, in turn, avoided criticizing the military and refused to support calls to hold it accountable for its human rights abuses.

With many of their organizers in jail, the secular democrats were ill-equipped to compete in the country?s first post-Mubarak presidential election last June. The junta, however, took no chances, barring all pro-Western secular democrats from the ballot through its appointed election commission. Morsi was elected because Egyptian voters preferred him to yet another Air Force general. But the generals denied voters plausible alternatives to military or Islamist rule.

Although the Muslim Brotherhood had been a late and halting participant in the revolution, once in power, President Morsi could have risen to the occasion and led all Egyptians into a democratic future. Instead, he entrenched the Brotherhood?s power and cemented its nascent alliance with the military.

Rio Tinto wins end to human rights abuse lawsuit in U.S.

By Jonathan Stempel

(Reuters) - Benefiting from a recent U.S. Supreme Court decision, Rio Tinto Plc has won the dismissal of a nearly 13-year-old U.S. lawsuit accusing the Anglo-Australian mining company of complicity in human rights abuses on the South Pacific island of Bougainville.

Friday's ruling by a majority of an 11-judge panel of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ends litigation begun in 2000.

Roughly 10,000 current and former Bougainville residents had sought to hold Rio Tinto responsible for human rights violations and thousands of deaths linked to polluting a copper and gold mine it once ran.

The ruling follows the Supreme Court's April 17 decision in Kiobel v. Royal Dutch Petroleum Co, where the justices limited the sweep of a 1789 U.S. law that lawyers had used for roughly three decades to fight human rights abuses worldwide.

Five justices said the Alien Tort Statute was meant to cover international law violations occurring in the United States, and that violations elsewhere must "touch and concern" U.S. territory "with sufficient force" to displace that presumption.

The Bougainville residents alleged that after workers in 1988 began to sabotage the Rio Tinto mine, the company goaded Papua New Guinea's government to exact retribution and conspired to impose a blockade, leading to thousands of civilian deaths.

On April 22, the Supreme Court threw out an earlier 9th Circuit ruling that let the lawsuit proceed, and asked it to revisit the matter in light of Kiobel.

Steve Berman, a lawyer for the Bougainville plaintiffs, did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

He had asked the 9th Circuit to send the case back to the Los Angeles district court so that his clients could try to proceed with other claims, "sans invocation of the ATS."

Kiobel was also cited this week by a Virginia federal judge who dismissed a lawsuit accusing defense contractor CACI International Inc of conspiring to torture detainees a decade ago at the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq.

The judge in that case said that because the alleged abuse occurred outside the United States, he lacked jurisdiction to consider claims by four former detainees. They plan to appeal.

The case is Sarei et al v. Rio Tinto Plc et al, 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, No. 02-56256.

(AP) ? A blazing heat wave expected to send the mercury soaring to nearly 120 degrees in Phoenix and Las Vegas over the weekend settled across the West on Friday, threatening to ground airliners and raising fears that pets will get burned on the scalding pavement.

The heat was so punishing that rangers took up positions at trailheads at Lake Mead in Nevada to persuade people not to hike. Zookeepers in Phoenix hosed down the elephants and fed tigers frozen fish snacks. And tourists at California's Death Valley took photos of the harsh landscape and a thermometer that read 121.

The mercury there was expected to reach nearly 130 through the weekend ? just short of the 134-degree reading from a century ago that stands as the highest temperature ever recorded on Earth.

"You have to take a picture of something like this. Otherwise no one will believe you," said Laura McAlpine, visiting Death Valley from Scotland on Friday.

The heat is not expected to break until Monday or Tuesday.

The scorching weather presented problems for airlines because high temperatures can make it more difficult for planes to take off. Hot air reduces lift and also can diminish engine performance. Planes taking off in the heat may need longer runways or may have to shed weight by carrying less fuel or cargo.

Smaller jets and propeller planes are more likely to be affected than bigger airliners that are better equipped for extreme temperatures.

However, Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport officials reported no such heat-related problems with any flights by Friday evening.

The National Weather Service said Phoenix reached 116 on Friday, two degrees short of the expected high, in part because of a light layer of smoke from wildfires in neighboring New Mexico that shielded the blazing sun. Las Vegas still was expecting near record highs over the weekend approaching 116 degrees while Phoenix was forecast to hit nearly 120. The record in Phoenix is 122.

Temperatures are also expected to soar across Utah and into Wyoming and Idaho, with triple-digit heat forecast for the Boise area. Cities in Washington state that are better known for cool, rainy weather should break the 90s next week.

"This is the hottest time of the year, but the temperatures that we'll be looking at for Friday through Sunday, they'll be toward the top," said National Weather Service meteorologist Mark O'Malley. "It's going to be baking hot across much of the entire West."

The heat is the result of a high-pressure system brought on by a shift in the jet stream, the high-altitude air current that dictates weather patterns. The jet stream has been more erratic in the past few years.

Health officials warned people to be extremely careful when venturing outdoors. The risks include not only dehydration and heat stroke but burns from the concrete and asphalt. Dogs can suffer burns and blisters on their paws by walking on scorching pavement.

"You will see people who go out walking with their dog at noon or in the middle of the day and don't bring enough water and it gets tragic pretty quickly," said Bretta Nelson, spokeswoman for the Arizona Humane Society. "You just don't want to find out the hard way."

Cooling stations were set up to shelter the homeless as well as elderly people who can't afford to run their air conditioners. In Phoenix, Joe Arpaio, the famously hard-nosed sheriff who runs a tent jail, planned to distribute ice cream and cold towels to inmates this weekend.

Officials said personnel were added to the Border Patrol search-and-rescue unit because of the danger to people trying to slip across the Mexican border. At least seven people have been found dead in the last week in Arizona after falling victim to the brutal desert heat.

In June 1990, when Phoenix hit 122 degrees, airlines were forced to cease flights for several hours because of a lack of data from the manufacturers on how the aircraft would operate in such extreme heat.

US Airways spokesman Todd Lehmacher said the airline now knows that its Boeings can fly at up to 126 degrees, and its Airbus fleet can operate at up to 127.

While the heat in Las Vegas is expected to peak on Sunday, it's unlikely to sideline the first round of the four-week Bikini Invitational tournament.

"I feel sorry for those poor girls having to strut themselves in 115 degrees, but there's $100,000 up for grabs," said Hard Rock casino spokeswoman Abigail Miller. "I think the girls are willing to make the sacrifice."

The website uses simple math, together with the EIA?s continuously updated data on gasoline and electricity prices around the country, to come up with?a national and state-by-state price for an ?eGallon?. That imaginary construct is essentially the quantity of?electricity that would take a typical EV as far as a gallon of gasoline would take the average new conventional car.?As the text points out, it?s hard for consumers to do this for themselves.?They see gasoline prices everywhere they drive but must dig through their utility bills to find their electricity price?not always obvious?and then might not know how to compare the two.

The?site?s documentation?indicates the eGallon calculation is based on the average energy usage of five specific EVs, including the Chevrolet Volt, Nissan Leaf, and Ford Focus EV, along with the 2012?EPA?fleet average fuel economy for what EPA defines as small and mid-size cars. The result is side-by-side postings of the US average gasoline and eGallon prices, plus a drop-down menu to replicate that for each state.?The site also includes?the chart at left, comparing these two prices?over the last decade.?

(AP) ? It's a big year for throwing. The greatest closer in baseball history, Mariano Rivera of the Yankees, is retiring. Aroldis Chapman, the overpowering Cincinnati Reds reliever, continues to fire fastballs beyond 100 mph.

And now some scientists say they've figured out when our human ancestors first started throwing with accuracy and fire power, as only people can: Nearly 2 million years ago.

That's what researchers conclude in a study released Wednesday by the journal Nature. There's plenty of skepticism about their conclusion. But the new paper contends that this throwing ability probably helped our ancient ancestor Homo erectus hunt, allowing him to toss weapons ? probably rocks and sharpened wooden spears.

The human throwing ability is unique. Not even a chimp, our closest living relative and a creature noted for strength, can throw nearly as fast as a 12-year-old Little Leaguer, says lead study author Neil Roach of George Washington University.

To find out how humans developed this ability, Roach and co-authors analyzed the throwing motions of 20 collegiate baseball players. Sometimes the players wore braces to mimic the anatomy of human ancestors, to see how anatomical changes affected throwing ability.

The human secret to throwing, the researchers propose, is that when the arm is cocked, it stores energy by stretching tendons, ligaments and muscles crossing the shoulder. It's like pulling back on a slingshot. Releasing that "elastic energy" makes the arm whip forward to make the throw.

That trick, in turn, was made possible by three anatomical changes in human evolution that affected the waist, shoulders and arms, the researchers concluded. And Homo erectus, which appeared about 2 million years ago, is the first ancient relative to combine those three changes, they said.

But others think the throwing ability must have appeared sometime later in human evolution.

Susan Larson, an anatomist at Stony Brook University in New York who didn't participate in the study, said the paper is the first to claim that elastic energy storage occurs in arms, rather than just in legs. The bouncing gait of a kangaroo is due to that phenomenon, she said, and the human Achilles tendon stores energy to help people walk.

The new analysis offers good evidence that the shoulder is storing elastic energy, even though the shoulder doesn't have the long tendons that do that job in legs, she said. So maybe other tissues can do it too, she said.

But Larson, an expert on evolution of the human shoulder, said she does not think Homo erectus could throw like a modern human. She said she believes its shoulders were too narrow and that the orientation of the shoulder joint on the body would make overhand throwing "more or less impossible."

Rick Potts, director of the human origins program at the Smithsonian Institution, said he is "not at all convinced" by the paper's argument about when and why throwing appeared.

The authors did not present any data to counter Larson's published work that indicates the erectus shoulder was ill-suited for throwing, he said.

And it is "a stretch" to say that throwing would give erectus an advantage in hunting, Potts said. Large animals have to be pierced in specific spots for a kill, which would seem to require more accuracy than one could expect erectus to achieve from a distance, he said.

Potts noted that the earliest known spears, which date from about 400,000 years ago, were used for thrusting rather than throwing.

BlackBerry launches Secure Work Space platform on Android

BES10 Secure Work Space

A secure area to keep all enterprise apps, data and communication safe without a VPN

Following up on its goal to have the products released by the end of June, BlackBerry has just put its Secure Work Space apps into the Play Store. The pair of apps -- "Secure Work Space for BES10" and "Work Space Manager for BES10" -- together let enterprise network administrators control corporate data on users devices and keep it safe. The app provides an alternative launcher that gives access to a completely sandboxed set of enterprise apps such as email, calendar, contacts and a secure browser. These apps and their associated data can be controlled by the BlackBerry Enterprise Service (BES) administrator just like any other BlackBerry can, which is a huge step in the right direction for BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) programs.

Although they won't do you much good until your company has set up your device (and its back-end) to use the service, both of the apps are now showing as available for download in the Play Store. Now is the time to go talk to IT at your place of work to see if they can get you set up.

Patent challengers must prove they have a 'significant presence' in the US: ITC

Patent trolls must prove they have a 'significant presence' in the US

The International Trade Commission has become increasingly tired of all the patent mischief it's forced to deal with, just as we've become tired of reporting on it. That's why its latest defense against time-wasters could potentially be a very good idea. According to Reuters, the ITC will soon demand upfront proof that the complainant in a patent case has a "significant presence in the United States" and isn't merely a fly-by-night outfit created for the purpose of pursuing litigation. The new rule has already been trialed in a pilot program, and Google, Intel, HP and others have voiced their support. It can't fix everything, of course, since major companies will still be able to game the system to hamper their rivals, but with the FTC and the White House also taking steps to subject "patent-assertion entities" to greater scrutiny, it feels like the wheels of government may be starting to catch up with the trolls.

Brian Shaw gets first crack at head coaching job

DENVER (AP) ? At long last, Brian Shaw is getting his first chance to coach an NBA team.

The former guard for the Los Angeles Lakers and Phil Jackson pupil has agreed to succeed George Karl as coach of the Denver Nuggets, a person familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press.

The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity Monday night because the deal hadn't been officially announced.

Still, it was the buzz of the basketball world.

"I think the Nuggets are going to benefit from his tenure," Jackson tweeted.

"So great to see Brian Shaw rewarded with this long overdue opportunity," Pacers coach Frank Vogel told The AP in a text. "Congrats to Brian and the Nuggets. Denver just got one of the best head coaches this league will see for years to come."

The Denver Post first announced the agreement with Shaw, the Indiana Pacers assistant who told the newspaper he's been "prepared by the best of the best" for his first NBA head coaching job, adding "I feel like I've waited and paid my dues."

Shaw is a longtime assistant who has interviewed about a dozen times for head coaching positions but kept coming up short until Monday.

He beat out Lionel Hollins, the former Memphis Grizzlies coach.

The Nuggets called a news conference for Tuesday afternoon, where team president Josh Kroenke and newly hired general manager Tim Connelly will introduce their new coach.

Shaw replaces Karl, who was ousted June 6 just weeks after winning the league's Coach of the Year award.

Shaw inherits a young team loaded with talent that won a franchise-record 57 games but lost Danilo Gallinari to a knee injury down the stretch and bowed out in the first round of the playoffs for the ninth time in 10 years.

Gallinari recently underwent surgery and is expected back in December.

The Nuggets have been a state of flux all summer after they were knocked off by the Golden State Warriors in six games in the first round of the playoffs.

First, Masai Ujiri, who engineered the win-win trade of Carmelo Anthony to the New York Knicks, left the Nuggets' front office for the GM job in Toronto. Ujiri was the league's Executive of the Year.

Less than a week later, Kroenke fired Karl.

Ujiri's right-hand man, Pete D'Allesandro, then took the Sacramento Kings' GM job and took Denver executive Mike Bratz with him.

Also, the Nuggets' top perimeter defender, Andre Iguodala, decided to opt out of the final year of his contract to become an unrestricted free agent, although he could return to Denver on a five-year deal while the most he could get elsewhere is a four-year contract.

Shaw, 47, owns five NBA championship rings as a player and assistant coach. A first-round draft pick by the Boston Celtics in 1988, Shaw played for eight teams in his 14 NBA seasons.

As Vogel's top assistant, Shaw drew praise for his work with rising star Paul George last season. The Pacers forward was an All-Star and helped lead Indiana to the Eastern Conference finals, where they took the eventual champion Miami Heat to seven games.

Although he has deep roots with the triangle offense that Jackson featured with the Chicago Bulls and the Lakers, Shaw told the Denver Post he won't use that system with the Nuggets, who thrived in a fast-paced, free-flowing system under Karl.

Shaw played at St. Mary's and UC Santa Barbara before an NBA career that lasted from 1988 to 2003. He was a member of the Lakers' three championship teams in the early 2000s and Jackson hired him as an assistant after he retired.

He won two more titles with L.A. as an assistant coach and when Jackson retired from the Lakers in 2011, Kobe Bryant voiced his support for Shaw becoming Jackson's successor, but he was passed over for that promotion.
