I supported the Affordable Health Care Act as a step in the right direction, but it is only the first step in a long journey. "States are not waiting for Congress to act. Vermont is moving forward on a single payer system, led by a push from small and medium-sized businesses who are getting crushed by health care costs. California has passed a Medicare for All system out of their legislature twice only to be vetoed by the Republican governor. Fourteen of the fifteen studies have showed that if a state went for a Medicare for All system, it would be cost neutral or save up to $19 billion per year while at the same time insuring everyone and improving the quality of care. "Today's decision marks another turning point in our country's approach to health care equality. Now's the time to put aside partisanship and work together to make our health care policy even stronger."

Local football coach charged with felony grand larceny
Dale Sexton, a Holland Patent varsity softball coach and newly appointed head varsity football coach was arrested Wednesday on charges of felony third-degree grand larceny, the Oneida County Sheriff?s Office said.
Sexton, 43, is accused of taking money given to him to pay for his father-in-law?s medical bills and using it for his own purposes.
?His father in law was sick, had cancer, and he took money from him,? said Assistant District Attorney Bernard Hyman.
An investigation was stated after Sexton?s father-in-law contacted the District Attorney?s Office, and Sexton was arrested Wednesday.
In April, Sexton was appointed head varsity football coach, a title which comes with a $3,405 stipend.
?He is not presently working for the school as we speak, he was appointed for the fall,? Holland Patent Superintendent Kathy Davis said. ?Once we?ve discussed with the board of education, we?ll make the best decision for the students.?
Hyman would not disclose how much Sexton allegedly took, but in New York, a third-degree grand larceny charge indicates that the alleged amount stolen is more than $3,000.
Sexton was arraigned Thursday and sent to Oneida County jail on $25,000 bail. He will return to Trenton Town Court on July 2.

Falun Gong claims assaults in San Francisco

Practitioners of the Falun Gong spiritual movement in San Francisco claim they have been the targets of a series of assaults orchestrated by the Chinese consulate, and they?re urging police and prosecutors to investigate the incidents as hate crimes.
Falun Gong practitioners have been harassed and assaulted at least nine times in past eight months -- seven times in Chinatown alone, said Sherry Zhang, spokeswoman for the Falun Gong in San Francisco. Police reports were filed in at least three cases, she said.
?We definitely want them to take this very seriously. It definitely is not an isolated incident anymore,? Zhang told msnbc.com on Wednesday.
San Francisco?s police chief said authorities don?t know yet whether the incidents were coordinated attacks.
Falun Gong is outlawed in China, where the Communist Party leadership in 1999 declared it a ?heretical organization? and views it as a destructive cult. Falun Gong leaders claim their adherents are persecuted and tortured in China, and that followers in the U.S. and other countries are harassed by people loyal to the Chinese government.
Falun Gong followers in San Francisco last week showed a video of an alleged assault to the Board of Supervisors and also held a demonstration outside City Hall.
The video was of a June 10 incident on a street corner in San Francisco's Chinatown where a group of Falun Gong practitioners had gathered, holding signs and handing out literature detailing what they said was the persecution and torture of followers in China.?
In the video, which Zhang said was a compilation of shots by Falun Gong practitioners and bystanders, an older?Chinese man in a hat allegedly curses at a Falun Gong member and then punches him in the face. As police arrive, another Chinese-speaking man in the crowd gestures toward a person filming the incident and, according to the videomaker?s translation, yells, ?Don?t stare at me. If I in mainland China I would break your leg.? A 72-year-old man is being investigated for alleged battery in the case, according to the police report.
In another case on June 16, a Falun Gong member told police a Chinese man struck her wrist with a protest sign. The man was cited by police and released.

Researchers analyzed observations made by two?Mars-orbiting spacecraft to calculate the size of snowflakes on the Red Planet, which are composed of carbon dioxide rather than water.
"These are very fine particles, not big flakes," study co-author Kerri Cahoy, of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, said in a statement. An astronaut standing among snow particles falling onto the Martian surface "would probably see it as a fog, because they?re so small," Cahoy added.

Clouds of snowhang above Mars during the planet's winter, covering its poles and reaching about halfway to the equator. The researchers studied observations of these clouds made over the last decade or so by two NASA spacecraft, the Mars Global Surveyor (MGS) and the?Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter?(MRO).
For example, the team looked at temperature and pressure profiles taken by MRO to determine where and when conditions would allow carbon dioxide snow particles to form. They also analyzed measurements from MGS' laser altimeter, which gauged the topography of Mars by timing how long laser pulses took to bounce back from the planet's surface. Occasionally, the laser beam returned faster than anticipated, after ricocheting off?cloud?particles in the Martian atmosphere.
By analyzing how much light these clouds reflected, the researchers were able to calculate the density of carbon dioxide in each one. They figured out the total mass of snow particles hovering above Mars' poles by examining earlier measurements of tiny, seasonal shifts in the planet's gravitational field.
The team put all of this information together to calculate the number and size of individual snow particles in the polar clouds at various times. The scientists found that particle size differed from pole to pole, with flakes in the north measuring between 8 to 22 microns and those in the south just 4 to 13 microns.
Both of these size ranges are microscopic, about comparable to the width of a human red blood cell, the researches said.
?For the first time, using only spacecraft data, we really revealed this phenomenon on Mars," said lead author Renyu Hu, a grad student at MIT.
The results of the study will be published in an upcoming issue of the Journal of Geophysical Research.
Learning from the size of snow
Snowflakes require a kernel of some sort around which to form ? a speck of dust, for example. So knowing the size of Martian snowflakes may help researchers better understand the properties and behavior of dust in the Red Planet's atmosphere, Hu said.
"What kinds of dust do you need to have this kind of condensation?" he said. "Do you need tiny dust particles? Do you need a water coating around that dust to facilitate cloud formation?"
Further, Martian snow may affect how heat is distributed around Mars, reflecting sunlight in various ways depending on the size of each particle.
"They could be completely different in their contribution to the energy budget of the planet," Hu says. ?These datasets could be used to study many problems."?
